Cats Score Final Three to Beat Duke

Junior Lindsey McKone continued her breakout season, delivering two key plays down the stretch in No. 7 Northwestern’s wild 21-20 comeback victory over Duke.

McKone, who had a career-high seven points in a 21-15 win over Dartmouth on Friday night, forced a turnover that set up Liza Elder’s game-tying goal with just 1:18 to play. McKone then scored the game-winning goal with 25 ticks left on the clock.

The offensive shootout saw Duke go up by as many as five goals at 12-7 late in the first half before Northwestern scored three times in the final 2:05 of the first half, and then scored the first three goals of the second half to regain the lead at 13-12.

After Lauren Gilbert’s free position goal with 10:09 left gave Northwestern an 18-17 lead, Duke scored three times in a span of just 78 seconds, taking a 20-18 lead on Charlotte North’s goal with 7:16 left. That would be Duke’s final score of the game.

Duke (2-1) dominated the draw in the game, 26-17, with the Jenner sisters, Maddie (13) and Olivia (8) combining for 21, but Northwestern’s Brenna Dwyer came up with two big ones down the stretch. Dwyer got the draw controls to set up McKone’s game-winner and then to help the Wildcats run out the clock.

Northwestern (3-0), playing without star Selena Lasota, had nine different players score goals in its third straight 21-goal effort. Gilbert led the way with five goals and Elder and Claire Quinn each had hat tricks.

Olivia Jenner had a game-high nine points (5g, 4a) for Duke. Charlotte North had five goals and Catherine Cordrey scored four times.

Navy’s Wild Rally Stifles Saint Joe's

Trailing by four goals late in the game, No. 19 Navy ripped off five goals in a span of less than three minutes to post a dramatic 12-11 victory over Saint Joseph’s at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Olivia Little’s goal with 7:18 remaining gave Saint Joseph’s an 11-7 lead, forcing Navy head coach Cindy Timchal to call a timeout.

Junior Annalise Heyward scored with 6:07 to play, the first of three Navy goals in a span of just 57 seconds. Freshman Moriah Sndyer scored at the 5:36 mark and Heyward tallied again just 26 seconds later. Heyward stayed hot, tying the game with 4:08 to play and then Kayla Harris scored the game-winner with 3:37 left.

Heyward led Navy (1-1) with four goals and two assists and Harris scored three times. Francesca Donato had a goal and four assists for the Hawks (0-2), and Corinne Buttner made 16 saves.

Dominant Second Half Propels JMU

The final score was a comfortable nine-goal margin at 18-9, but for 30 minutes unranked and winless Connecticut gave No. 8 James Madison all it could handle on a chilly Sunday afternoon on Tierney Field at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.

A three-goal scoring run midway through the first half gave the Huskies (0-3) a 6-4 lead before JMU answered with three straight of its own. UConn’s Olivia Miles scored with just 29 seconds left in the half to send the teams into the lockerrooms all locked up.

JMU scored three straight times in the opening six minutes of the second half to take control and the scoring run eventually reached 10 straight goals.

Hanna Haven had four goals and three assists for the Dukes (2-1) and Logan Brennan added four goals as well. Sydney Watson had four goals for UConn and also grabbed eight draw controls.

• Andie Aldave and Samantha Lynch each scored four times as No. 17 Notre Dame downed Liberty 14-10. The Irish scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed on the way to improving to 3-0 for the season. Carly White led the Flames with three goals and Kayla Foster had a goal and three assists to become Liberty’s all-time leading scorer with 188 points.

• Dartmouth scored three straight goals at the end of regulation, tying the game with just 27 seconds left on Kellen D’Alleva’s goal, but Molly Garrett delivered the winner in overtime as Michigan improved to 4-0 with the 11-10 overtime win. Mira Shane made 16 saves for the victory.

• Fresno State poured in 12 first half goals and coasted to an 18-10 win over Oregon in a neutral site game played in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs are now 3-0 for the season, including 2-0 against Pac-12 teams. Tiffiny Wallace led Fresno with eight points on four goals and four assists. Jordyn Panolfo also scored four goals and added two assists.

• Rachel MacCheyne and Alex Leo scored goals in the final two minutes to break a 9-9 tie and lead Niagara (2-0) to an 11-9 win over Binghamton. Niagara goalie Maren Geiger made 14 saves for the win while Binghamton goalie Taylor Passuello made 18 saves.

• Trailing 5-3, UC Davis went on a 9-1 run straddling halftime, beating Mercer 16-13 in a neutral site game in Jacksonville. Amanda Outcalt had two goals and three assists for the Aggies and Maddie Myers, Taylor Cuenin and Kate Graham each had hat tricks.

• Megan Menzuber had five goals and Grace Gabriel had four goals, two assists and eight draw controls as Marquette rode a 15-goal second half to a 22-9 victory over Detroit Mercy.

• Kirstie Greenlaw scored five goals, including three straight goals that turned a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 lead, as San Diego State beat Cal 13-9 in Las Vegas.
