The 2022 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft started with a curveball.

Chrome Lacrosse Club coach Tim Soudan called the name of Maryland attackman Logan Wisnauskas first overall, much to the surprise of those who expected NCAA points king Chris Gray to be the top pick in the draft. Instead, the Chrome get Wisnauskas – the No. 1 scorer in Maryland history who led his team to the top seed in the NCAA tournament.

Wisnauskas was the 2022 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after producing 48 goals and 36 assists heading into the NCAA tournament. He passed Jared Bernhardt for No. 1 in program history in points and was awarded the historic No. 1 jersey heading into the season — how fitting, and perhaps a precursor, for his professional lacrosse future.

Gray, who passed Lyle Thompson with his 401st point as the top scorer in NCAA history in his final collegiate game, went second overall to Ben Rubeor and the Atlas. He and Jeff Teat now form one of the most potent 1-2 punches in the league.

Redwoods LC coach Nat St. Laurent continued hoarding Notre Dame alums, gobbling up defenseman Arden Cohen at No. 3. At No. 4, Archers LC added to its already enviable collection of attackman with Matt Moore of Virginia. With his second pick of Round 1, Rubeor selected Towson LSM Koby Smith at No. 5 — a player ESPN analyst Paul Carcaterra called a unicorn at his position.

Andy Towers and reigning champion Chaos LC added a versatile defender at No. 6 in Brett Kennedy of Syracuse, someone skilled with a pole but can also play close. There was no shock at No. 4. Jim Stagnitta and Whipsnakes LC continued adding Terps alumni to the team by selecting SSDM Roman Puglise. In the final pick of Round 1, Towers followed with another SSDM, Zachary Geddes of Georgetown.
