Four players competing this week in the U.S. women’s national team training camp are among 12 players who have signed with Athletes Unlimited, the startup league announced Thursday.
Defender Becca Block (Syracuse), midfielder Molly Garrett (Michigan), midfielder Ally Kennedy (Stony Brook) and attacker Lindsey McKone (Northwestern) will compete in the inaugural five-week season to be played at Maureen Hendricks Field in Boyds, Md., from July 23-Aug. 22.
Attacker Alex Aust (Maryland), a member of the gold medal-winning 2017 U.S. women’s national team, also signed with Athletes Unlimited.
“Having 20 members of the U.S. national team player pool confirmed for our inaugural lacrosse season is an incredible accomplishment and indicative of the thrilling competition fans can expect to follow this summer starting July 23,” said Jon Patricof, CEO and co-founder of Athletes Unlimited.
Other players who confirmed their commitment to the league this summer are Angie Benson (Virginia), Nicole Levy (Syracuse), Molly Little (Denver), Alyssa Parrella (Hofstra), Ella Simkins (Syracuse) , Caroline Wakefield (North Carolina) and Kayla Wood (North Carolina).
An updated roster of confirmed athletes can be found on the “Meet the Pros” page of the Athletes Unlimited website.
The 30-game season will have the largest TV and digital distribution ever for professional women’s lacrosse via partnerships with CBS Sports Network, FOX Sports, Facebook and YouTube. Through CBS and Fox alone, Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will reach more than 80 million homes in the U.S.
“We are so excited to welcome the NCAA draftees who have worked tirelessly during this year’s season as well as other talented idols to compete in our inaugural season this summer,” said Mira Shane, member of the Lacrosse Player Executive Committee. “We cannot wait to play in front of our fans in attendance and for our women’s lacrosse audience around the world who finally can tune in through our television and digital partners.”
Athletes Unlimited will play a short-form, fast-paced format consisting of eight-minute quarters, 9v9 game play and a 60-second shot clock all housed on an 80-by-50-yard playing field. The league will be comprised of 56 players that will roster four teams of 14 players each. Play will begin with draws at the beginning of each quarter as well as after every goal.
Individual players will earn points based on their stats and team wins, with those atop the leaderboard drafting new teams each week.
