Records are meant to be broken. We saw a handful of all-time marks fall in 2022.

Here are the nominees for Best Men’s Record-Breaker. Tomorrow, we vote on Best Women’s Record-Breaker.

BEST MEN’S RECORD-BREAKER

For the men’s player whose new record is most impressive.

CHRIS GRAY

Chris Gray became the Division I men’s career points leader in 2022, passing Albany’s Lyle Thompson with 401. Needing five points to tie and six to pass Thompson, Gray made history on a question mark dodge with 7:23 left in the fourth quarter of a 19-11 loss to Duke. Gray played in 71 career games, just one more than Thompson.

RYAN GEBHARDT

Gebhardt dropped 91 goals for MIT in 2022, setting the NCAA men's goals record for 300 in a career. He scored 209 in four years at Stevens before transferring as a graduate student to MIT, where he helped the Engineers to a 17-1 record. MIT made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament.

JOE POST

Post, a St. John Fisher faceoff man, set Division III career faceoff and ground ball records during the 2022 season. Better yet, he took every faceoff of his collegiate career with a wooden stick crafted by his father. In 78 career games, Post won 1,250 faceoffs and 854 ground balls.

BRODIE MERRILL

OK, so Merrill did not technically set the career outdoor ground ball record just yet. But he tied it in 2022. Ground ball No. 1,120 tied him with Greg Gurenlian for tops in outdoor lacrosse history. The 41-year-old has averaged 5.5 ground balls per game outdoors.
