SPARKS, Md. — Fueled by two goals each from Jake Caputo and Connor Mitchell, the Blue team downed the White team 9-6 to close out the second round of tryouts for the 2020 U.S. Men’s U19 team on Sunday morning at US Lacrosse headquarters.
Mitchell, a recent graduate of Calvert Hall (Md.) headed to Ohio State, added an assist to give him a team-high three points. His second goal came early in the fourth quarter to give Blue a 7-5 lead and then Caputo, a recent graduate of Middle Creek (N.C.) headed to Duke, scored back-to-back goals to put the game away.
Blue goalies Liam Entenmann (Chaminade – N.Y. / Notre Dame) and Christian Tomei (Oxbridge Academy – Fla. / Ohio State) each made four saves to combine for the win.
The White team was led in scoring by the lone player with collegiate experience in the event. Cole Kirst, a rising sophomore at Lehigh, had a goal and two assists. Graham Bundy Jr. (MICDS – Mo. / Georgetown) had a team-best two goals for the White team.
The event, streamed live by Lax Sports Network, featured 50 of the nation’s top young players trying to make the U.S. team that will compete in the 2020 World Lacrosse Men’s U19 World Championship next summer in Ireland. The weekend featured sessions on Friday and Saturday leading into Sunday morning’s game.
“For a group that trained hard all weekend to come out and play the way they did today, and really play for one another, you could feel that energy on the field,” said head coach Nick Myers. “I thought there were a lot of positives, but that probably more than anything, the understanding the we over the me was a great thing to see on display.”
Following the session, Myers and his staff gathered to begin the deliberations on which 30 players will advance to the training team. Ultimately, 23 players (the maximum number allowed by World Lacrosse rules) will make the final roster.
“The hardest thing in this process is having to make these decisions,” said Myers, who led the 2016 U.S. team to a gold medal in the most recent U19 world championship. “You explain the differentiators to the men and challenge them to give you a level of effort and toughness that’s uncommon. When you get that and then to have to go ahead and make some really tough decisions when you feel like, hey these three or four guys all did what we asked, but we can’t take all four — that’s what’s really hard.”
The 30-member training team will be announced early this week.
