Brodie Merrill has rejected the Toronto Rock's 2018-19 contract offer and has opted to sign elsewhere for the coming season, the team announced Monday.
Jamie Dawick, Toronto's owner, president and general manager, offered the contract to the former Rock captain prior to free agency opening, which began Aug. 1. Merrill informed Dawick on Sunday that he would not be returning to Toronto for the upcoming season. This past year, Merrill finished second on the team with 127 loose balls, while adding 22 points and 14 caused turnovers.
Once Merrill signs with another team, the Rock will receive compensation from the league in the form of a draft pick(s) in future NLL drafts following the 2018-19 season. The specific compensation is calculated based on a formula that takes into account the recent and potential future performance of the player.
According to Dawick, there is no timeline in place to announce a new captain, but the team will name a new one prior to the opening of the regular season.
