Michele Scannell and Emily Santoli were the headliners, but Dani Bursinger stole the show, scoring five goals and reeling in 10 draw controls to lead No. 2 Florida Southern to a 17-16 win Saturday over No. 1 Adelphi in an early season showdown of the top two teams in NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse.

Bursinger added two assists, as the Mocs (2-0) ended a two-game losing streak against the Panthers. The teams have met in the last two NCAA championship games, with Florida Southern winning in 2016 and Adelphi in 2017.

Scannell, the Brine/US Lacrosse Preseason Player of the Year, led the Panthers (0-1) with four goals and two assists in the loss. Kole Pollock added four goals.

Santoli, the two-time IWLCA Division II Midfielder of the Year, finished with three goals. Marina Jozokos, Riley Bannatyne and Shannon Mazza scored two goals apiece for the Mocs.

Florida Southern got hot at the end of the first half, scoring three of the last four goals, then added three goals in the first four minutes of the second half to build a 12-6 lead.

Adelphi chipped away at the lead and closed to within 13-12 with 12:30 remaining.

Florida Southern seemingly put the game away with three goals in a span of 1:51 to go up 16-12. But the Panthers were not done.

Trailing 17-13 with 1:25 remaining, Adelphi rattled off three goals in just 29 seconds and had the last possession of the game. But Mocs goalie Alanna Zambetti made two huge saves as time expired to preserve the win.

Both teams shot exceedingly well. Florida Southern converted 13 of its first 18 shots (72 percent) before cooling off. The Mocs finished 17-for-31 (54.8 percent). The Panthers shot 16-for-33 (48.5 percent).
