Fitting of their moniker, the New York Riptide have made a splash in free agency.
The Long Island franchise, under new general manager Jim Veltman and head coach Dan Ladouceur, announced the signing of Callum Crawford on Sunday. The details of the two-year deal were not disclosed, per team policy.
Crawford, a 15-year veteran, spent the last three seasons with the New England Black Wolves. In the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he recorded 33 goals and 43 assists and was an MVP finalist. His career total of 1,049 points (390 goals) makes him just the 11th member in league history to reach the 1,000 club.
“His attributes at playing this game are second to none and his track record proves that,” Veltman said in an official release. “This acquisition expedites our team building process exponentially. We are over-excited to welcome him to New York.”
Crawford, who will be 36 when the 2020 season begins, is still performing at an elite level.
Crawford has had 10 seasons with 70 or more points, including two of 100 or more. His career-high 115 points came in 2016 when he was a member of the Colorado Mammoth. He posted 109 points in 2019 with New England. He had a career-high 48 goals in 2019 and has scored 30 or more goals in seven of his 15 seasons, including each of the last five. In 2016, Crawford had a career-high 83 assists, which ties for the second-most in a single season in the league history books. He has dished out 50 or more assists in seven seasons during his career.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to help build this franchise and be a piece of what this team believes they need to become the premier franchise in the NLL,” said Crawford, the 18th overall pick in the 2005 Entry Draft by the Calgary Roughnecks.
