Ricky Fried loves multifaceted goalies who can defend outside the cage, cause turnovers and ignite transition. In fact, his system of full-field pressure requires it.
True to form, Fried, named head coach of the Philadelphia Fire after Cindy Timchal stepped down due to scheduling conflicts, selected goalie Caylee Waters with No. 1 overall pick in the inaugural Women’s Professional Lacrosse League draft Wednesday.
Waters, a two-time IWLCA Goalie of the Year at North Carolina, has experience playing in Fried’s system. She was a member of the 2015-16 U.S. national team and was on the 2017 World Cup training team.
Fried recently completed an eight-year run as the U.S. coach, leaving that post with two World Cup championships and also a World Games gold medal. Also the coach at Georgetown, Fried now will look to replicate that success at the professional level.

The New England Command selected attacker Kayla Treanor (Syracuse ’16) with the No. 2 overall pick, a location that makes sense considering Boston College hired Treanor as an assistant coach this summer. Treanor is coming off a record-setting World Cup, in which she set a new U.S. record with 43 points (24 goals, 19 assists) and became the first player to be named Player of the Match twice in the same event.

Three more U.S. players came off the board to close out the first round. The New York Fight chose defender Alice Mercer (Maryland ’16), the Baltimore Brave tabbed attacker Michelle Tumolo (Syracuse ’13) and the Upstate Pride landed midfielder Ally Carey (Vanderbilt ’12).
There was plenty of star power selected in the ensuing rounds, including three-time Tewaaraton winner Taylor Cummings (Maryland ’16) and two-time Tewaaraton winner Hannah Nielsen (Northwestern ’09) going in the second round at No. 8 and No. 10 overall to New York and Philadelphia, respectively.
Results from the first four rounds and the rest of each team’s completed roster appear below. Select players from all five teams will compete in the WPLL showcase game Sept. 20 at US Lacrosse in Sparks, Md.
