Charlotte North needed one goal for history. She got it out of the way quickly. Then it was business as usual for Boston College.

North scored a game-high four goals — the first of which broke the Division I women’s career goals record previously held by Courtney Murphy (Stony Brook, 2014-18) — and led third-seeded Boston College to a 13-8 win over defensive stalwart Denver in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Boston College takes on sixth-seeded Loyola on Thursday in the NCAA quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Eagles led 3-1 after the first quarter and 4-1 after Cassidy Weeks opened the second quarter with a goal, but Denver cut the deficit to 4-3 on goals from Kayla DeRose and Sloane Kipp.

BC answered with two of its own, and after Bea Behrins scored for the Pioneers, the Eagles scored twice more for an 8-4 lead. Kipp’s second goal of the game made it 8-5 just before halftime.

The high-flying Eagles offense was limited overall by Denver, one of the top defensive units in the country, but BC’s own defense held firm in the third quarter. There were just two goals scored in the period — both by Boston College — allowing the Eagles to take a 10-5 lead into the final stanza.

And even though Denver opened the final 15 minutes with three of the first four goals — one each from Lauren Black, Raegan Wilson and Bea Behrins — the Pios were in too deep of a hole. North answered Behrins’ goal 59 seconds later, extending BC’s lead to 12-8 with 2:29 remaining, and Jenn Medjid tacked on another goal with five seconds left for the final margin.

Boston College now takes on a hungry Loyola team looking to make an appearance in the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 2003.
