Cleveland State will welcome its second coach in school history this fall. The program announced that it promoted assistant Andy German to head coach.
German got the nod after spending the first four years as an assistant to coach Dylan Sheridan, who left this offseason to join Nick Myers’ Ohio State staff. He held the interim coach tag after Sheridan's departure.
"I couldn't be more excited to take the reins of CSU lacrosse and continue to build on what Dylan and I started back in 2015," German said. "Dylan has been an incredible mentor and leader, but more importantly a better friend, and I look forward to his continued success at OSU.”
German takes the helm of a Cleveland State program fresh off its best season in school history. The Vikings went 8-7 overall and won seven of its final 10 games in 2019. They stayed within four goals of Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State.
As defensive coordinator, German led a unit that finished 18th in Division I allowing just 10.27 goals per game. Cleveland State also sat in the top 25 in caused turnovers and led the country with a 70.7 opponent clearing percentage.
"After a careful evaluation of the options and of our impressive progress as a lacrosse program over the last three seasons, it is clear that continuity is what will deliver a sustained positive trajectory for CSU lacrosse," Director of Athletics Scott Garrett said. "We are incredibly fortunate to have Coach German's leadership, vision and veteran experience."
Before his time at Cleveland State, German was an assistant on the staff at Villanova form 2011-14, focusing on offense and serving the recruiting coordinator. Although this will be his first Division I head coaching gig, he led the St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.) program during the 2015 season.
