Colgate men’s lacrosse has its new coach. The next round of the Division I coaching carousel is complete, as the Raiders introduced former Notre Dame assistant Matt Karweck as their head coach at a Thursday morning press conference. Inside Lacrosse first reported the hiring.

The hire comes weeks after former Colgate coach Mike Murphy resigned after leading the program for seven seasons. Murphy was later named head coach at the Hill School (Pa.).

In steps Karweck, who served as an assistant under Kevin Corrigan for six seasons. In total, the Irish went 64-30 in the season with Karweck as an assistant — a position that saw him mentoring offensive stars like Matt Kavanagh and Sergio Perkovic. He also spent his college career at Notre Dame, scoring 60 goals and 30 assists from 2003-06.

Karweck joins a Colgate program fresh off a 7-8 record in 2018, including an early upset of Cornell. The Raiders haven’t finished with a winning record since 2015, when they went 10-5 and fell to North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament. 

Before heading to South Bend, Karweck served as the offensive coordinator at Detroit-Mercy in 2011 and led the Indiana MCLA program from 2007-2010. He played professionally in England with the Sheffield Steelers and in the MLL with the Chicago Machine.

Karweck is a native of Penn Yan, N.Y. and starred for Penn Yan Academy. He led his team to a Section V Class C title all four seasons, and the state title in 2001.
