Introducing 'Lacrosse Gameday' — Your All-Access Pass to the Best Games

Sitting in the first row of Section 103 of the JMA Wireless Dome as Michael Leo landed inside the crease and scored what looked like the game-winning goal in overtime against Maryland, I quickly panned to the crowd that was losing its collective mind.

The fans, and one USA Lacrosse Magazine staffer, stood for what felt like 20 minutes waiting for a decision on the replay review of Leo’s goal. Eventually, a collective gasp rang out of the Dome as the official waved no-goal. That noise dissipated when George Stamos score the winner for Maryland not long after.

Yes, the ending wasn’t quite what Syracuse fans hoped for, but I couldn’t help but smile through it all. The Maryland-Syracuse doubleheader — the afternoon’s women’s game went to Maryland in overtime, too — was the first public rendition of our Lacrosse Gameday project, but the third straight week I took the show on the road to showcase the top games in college lacrosse.

Feb. 3 — Denver and JJ Sillstrop roar back to shock Johns Hopkins in overtime at Homewood Field.

Feb. 10 — Katelyn Morgan scores the overtime winner for James Madison in a 19-18 victory over North Carolina.

Feb. 17 — Maryland men’s and women’s lacrosse score overtime wins over Syracuse in the JMA Wireless Dome. The men’s finish was the most talked about sequence of the young season.

Basically, wherever Lacrosse Gameday goes, a great game is sure to follow.

This season, USA Lacrosse Magazine launched Lacrosse Gameday — a behind-the-scenes look at some of the top venues in the sport combined with the coverage that we’d normally give Final Four weekend. This season, fans will get a glimpse at some of the sport’s top matchups from an angle rarely seen.

Lacrosse Gameday will aim to visit historic college lacrosse venues but also spend time covering some of the most longstanding high school rivalries in the nation. We’d like to bring to life a gameday in the sport — no matter where, no matter when.

Will our streak of overtime games in Lacrosse Gameday weekends eventually come to an end? Most likely. However, the team here at USA Lacrosse Magazine will do its best to seek out the games that will make the sport shine (and the venues that do the same).

This weekend, we’re staying home, giving you an all-access pass to USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. before Virginia women’s lacrosse takes on Cornell on Tierney Field this Sunday at noon. Fans will get a tour of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the grounds surrounding historic Tierney Field and the offices where USA Lacrosse Magazine is produced.

We’re excited to bring you the best that college lacrosse has to offer, and we hope you enjoy the ride as much as we have.
