Division II Men's Recap: Lenoir-Rhyne Stays Hot in Win Over Rollins

The quarterfinal round of the Division II men’s NCAA tournament featured plenty of drama.

Two of the four contests Sunday were decided by one goal, setting up the semifinal round to be played on Sunday, May 21. Both semifinals are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Eastern.

LE MOYNE 11, ADELPHI 7

Le Moyne’s perfect season is headed to the national semifinals.

The Dolphins — in their final Division II season before making the jump to Division I — trailed by one with 10:05 left in the third quarter before ending the game with seven of the final nine goals in an 11-7 win over NE-10 rival Adelphi.

Blake Van Epps tied it at 6 with 6:45 left in the third quarter, then Ethan Loun scored two straight for an 8-6 lead that Le Moyne never surrendered.

Loun led Le Moyne with three goals, and Kevin Sheehan had two goals and one assist. Eight Dolphins scored in the win.

MERCYHURST 10, SAINT ANSELM 9

In the first-ever meeting between Mercyhurst and Saint Anselm, Mercyhurst scored three of the fourth quarter’s four goals in a 10-9 win over the Hawks. Nicholas Mabe tied it at 9 with 4:01 to play, then Colin Tardif assisted Jeremi Phoenix-Lefebvre’s game-winner with 2:06 left.

Brett Olney’s save on a shot by Joe Lombardi maintained the 10-9 lead. Mercyhurst’s clear attempt failed, but after it came back up with the ball, Mercyhurst took a timeout. Oleny turned it over out of the timeout, and a last-ditch shot by Noah Larsen was blocked with two seconds remaining.

Stephen Morley picked up the final ground ball, sealing Mercyhurst’s win.

LENOIR-RHYNE 14, ROLLINS 8

A few days after knocking off the defending champion, Lenoir-Rhyne dominated Rollins to the tune of a 14-8 win. The Bears trailed 2-0 and 4-2 but ripped off six straight goals to take an 8-4 advantage early in the third quarter.

Another extended run — this one 5-0 — between the third and fourth quarters put separation between the Bears and the Tars.

Evan Voss had two goals and five assists, Will Canata had three goals and three other Bears — Riley Seay, Myles Moffat and Bryce Reece — had two goals.

LIMESTONE 11, UINDY 10

Limestone scored the tying (Chris Erneston) and winning (Zachary Terry) goals — the only two goals scored in the entire fourth quarter — to dispatch UIndy 11-10.

The Saints led 8-6 on Ernestone’s goal with 8:04 left in the third quarter, but a 4-1 run by UIndy inside the quarter’s final 7:25 put the Greyhounds ahead 10-9. Cory Lyons then made two of his 14 saves in the fourth quarter, and his defense otherwise shut the door on UIndy’s scoring hopes.

UIndy had one final opportunity with less than 90 seconds left. Right out of a timeout, Ben Foster turned the ball over, and Limestone killed the final 59 seconds.
