Navy head coach Joe Amplo wasted little time finding a replacement for offensive coordinator Mike Phipps, who announced Tuesday that he was leaving the Midshipmen for the same position on John Tillman’s staff at Maryland.
With roughly six weeks left before the start of the 2024 season, Amplo brought in the type of coach who shouldn’t take long to impress his new players. Dave Cottle, a four-time Major League Lacrosse champion with the Chesapeake Bayhawks and a decorated college head coach at Maryland and Loyola, will replace Phipps, according to Inside Lacrosse.
Cottle retired from Major League Lacrosse in January 2020 and has since stayed active in lacrosse.
In 2010, he was part of the consulting group that helped launch Marquette’s lacrosse programs. Amplo was hired as Marquette’s first coach in 2011 before taking the reins in 2012.
Both Cottle and Navy have yet to comment on the hiring.
