Chung Sets Penn Assist Record in Quakers Win

Junior attacker Erika Chung set a Penn single-game record with eight assists as the Quakers picked up a key Ivy League victory, beating Brown 19-13. The previous school record of seven was set by Erin Brennan in 2012 and matched by Emily Rogers-Healion in 2018.

Brown’s Mia Mascone, who had her own record-breaking day, had two goals and an assist in the first quarter to help the Bears to a 5-4 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Mascone finished the day with 11 points on five goals and six assists, giving her a school record 88 points this season. Mascone broke Lauren Becker’s record of 78 points in a season that had stood for nearly 40 years.

Three second quarter goals from Nikki Miles helped Penn take a 10-8 halftime lead. Brown’s Leah Caputo scored the first goal of the second half, but Penn then scored seven of the next nine goals to take control.

Chung’s eight points lead the Quakers while Miles had a big day with five goals and two assists.

The victory clinched a spot in the Ivy League tournament for 12th-ranked Penn, which upset Loyola on Wednesday.

Yale Grabs at Least Share of First Ivy Title Since 2003

Yale’s breakthrough season continued with a dominating 21-8 victory at Cornell on Saturday. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 8 by USA Lacrosse Magazine, wrapped up the No. 1 seed and will host the upcoming Ivy League tournament. Yale also clinched at least a share of the Ivy League regular season championship for just the third time in school history (1980, 2003).

Taylor Everson scored five goals on just six shots and added an assist to pace the Yale offense. Fallon Vaughn (3g, 3a) also had six points and Sky Carrasquillo (4g, 1a) and Chloe Conaghan (2g, 3a) each had five points.

Yale, which was No. 4 in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee rankings released this week, has a big non-conference neutral site game on Monday against 2023 NCAA semifinalist Denver at Saint Joseph’s.

Denver Survives Scare, Wins Big East

Villanova gave No. 14 Denver a scare, but the Pioneers rallied in the second half for an 11-8 victory that them their fifth straight Big East regular season title. Villanova led 7-3 at halftime, but Denver scored four straight to open the second half and tie the game.

Villanova’s Sydney Pappas gave the Wildcats the lead again at 8-7 with 4:52 left in the third quarter, but that was their final score of the game.

Denver scored the final four goals of the game, all in the fourth quarter, and took the lead for good on Jane Earley’s extra-player opportunity with 4:12 left to play.

Lauren Black and Sloane Kipp each scored three times for Denver and Julia Gilbert (2g, 2a) and Olivia Penoyer (1g, 3a) both had four points. Pappas had four goals for the Wildcats.

Elsewhere in the USA Lacrosse Top 20

Georgia Latch had nine points, including a career-high six assists, as No. 6 Loyola clinched the No. 1 seed for the Patriot League tournament with a 21-6 win at Holy Cross. Chase Boyle added six goals and 15 draw controls.

No. 11 Princeton outscored Dartmouth 9-0 in the opening quarter on the way to a 17-11 victory over the Big Green. McKenzie Blake and Grace Tauckus each scored four goals for the Tigers while Haven Dora had a team-high eight points on two goals and six assists.

No. 17 James Madison stretched its conference winning streak at home to 37 games with a 17-8 win over Vanderbilt. Katelyn Morgan had two goals and six assists and Isabella Peterson scored four times.

No. 19 Stanford clinched the No. 1 seed for the Pac-12 tournament with a 21-8 victory over UC Davis. Jordyn Case led the Cardinal with five goals and Rylee Bouvier and Aliya Polisky each scored three goals.

Notable

Fairfield won its 15th straight game and clinched the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship with an 11-8 win at Siena. Fairfield held Siena scoreless for the first 27 minutes of the game and never trailed. Maggie Fort scored four goals and Claire Morris made nine saves to earn the win.

VCU beat city rival Richmond for the first time in school history. After falling behind 4-1 early, Richmond came back and took a 7-6 lead on Colleen Quinn’s goal with 5:53 left in the third quarter, but then went scoreless for the final 20 minutes of the game. Kiley Kozak’s goal with eight seconds left in the third quarter gave the Rams an 8-7 lead and then Kozak added an insurance goal in the fourth.

Binghamton moved into a tie for first place in America East and denied UMBC’s bid to wrap up the No. 1 seed in the league with a 14-13 overtime win. UMBC scored the first goal of the game, but Binghamton answered with four straight goals and UMBC never led again. The Retrievers did tie the game five times and had three great opportunities in the closing 75 seconds of regulation, but Binghamton goalie Sofia Salgado made two close-in saves and a third shot went high.

Binghamton won the draw to start overtime on a procedure call and then UMBC picked up a green card to give Binghamton a player-up opportunity. Gabriella Meli made the Retrievers pay and scored the game-winner.
