Division I Recap: Yale Emerges as Nation's Final Unbeaten Team

Just one undefeated team remains in Division I women’s lacrosse.

No. 17 Yale improved to 9-0 on the day that No. 2 Michigan lost its first game of the season, meaning the Bulldogs are the last of the unbeatens across the country.

The 10-5 win over upstart Brown in New Haven, Conn., was fueled by three goals from Fallon Vaughn and proved that Penn and Yale appear to be the class of the Ivy League at this point in the season.

It was a balanced offensive effort for the Bulldogs. Ashley Kiernan and Sky Carrasquillo each scored twice, while Chloe Conaghan tied Vaughn for the team’s points lead with one goal and two assists.

Team shots were tied at 20 apiece, and Laura O’Connor won what ended up as a battle of the goalies. She made five saves as compared to Margaret Woodberry’s three for Brown (8-3, 1-2 Ivy).

Yale was in control from the jump, scoring the game’s first four goals and holding Brown scoreless until Mia Mascone scored with 8:02 left in the second quarter.

The final six games of Yale’s regular season is rigorous. It next faces Boston College on Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass., before a pivotal Ivy League date with Penn next Sunday.

After playing Harvard and Cornell, two potential party crashers in the Ancient Eight, Yale hosts Denver on April 22 before finishing its regular slate on April 27 against Columbia.

No. 1 Maryland 8, No. 2 Michigan 6. Eloise Clevenger had a hat trick, and Maryland scored outscored Michigan 6-2 in the second half in Ann Arbor.

No. 3 Notre Dame 26, Pitt 5. Jackie Wolak had five goals and six assists, Madison Ahern had four goals and two assists and Arden Tierney had three goals and one assist.

No. 4 Northwestern 22, Rutgers 11. Izzy Scane and Madison Taylor each scored four times, and five other Wildcats had two-goals games. Cassidy Spilis had five goals for Rutgers.

No. 5 Syracuse 22, Louisville 12. Emma Tyrrell had five goals and Delaney Sweitzer made eight saves in front of 1,901 fans in the JMA Wireless Dome.

No. 6 Boston College 18, No. 15 North Carolina 12. Emma LoPinto scored seven goals, including four straight Boston College goals between the first and second quarters, and two assists to lead the Eagles in a rematch of last season’s ACC championship game.

Duke 15, No. 7 Virginia 10. The Blue Devils have somewhat quietly won five of their last six, including Saturday’s upset of Virginia. Duke never trailed after Eva Pronti gave her side a 5-4 lead with 5:36 left in the second quarter. Caroline DeBellis and Katie DeSimone combined for 10 goals.

No. 8 Loyola 20, Colgate 6. Seven goals from Sydni Black and 17 draw controls from Chase Boyle were more than enough to get past Colgate.

No. 11 Johns Hopkins 21, No. 9 James Madison 13. A 6-0 run between the first and second quarters gave Johns Hopkins the lead for good. Ava Angello, Maeve Barker and Campbell Case combined for 14 goals, and Bailey Cheetham had five assists. Madison Doucette made 12 saves.

No. 13 Florida 20, Vanderbilt 5. That’s now 11 straight wins for the Gators, who were led by  five goals and two assists by Danielle Pavinelli. Ashley Gonzalez had three goals and three assists.
No. 19 Fairfield 19, Canisius 8. Elizabeth Talluto had five goals and Kelly Haggerty had four in an easy MAAC win for the Stags.

No. 20 Stanford 20, Arizona State 8. Aliya Polisky, Jay Browne and Jordyn Case combined for 16 of Stanford’s 20 goals. Annabel Frist controlled 11 draws.

AROUND THE NATION

Binghamton 10, Vermont 9. The Bearcats scored the final three goals in the last 7:15, with Hayley Weltner scoring the eventual winner with 3:51 remaining. Sofia Salgado made 10 saves for Binghamton.

Hofstra 15, Towson 8. The Pride improved to 4-0 in the CAA by beating Towson, perennially one of the conference’s leaders. Melissa Sconone and Kerry Walser each scored four times.

Army 19, Lehigh 7. It was another big day for Brigid Duffy, whose seven goals and two assists paced the Black Knights. Allison Reilly was close behind with four goals and four assists.

Lafayette 10, Boston U 9 (2OT). Abby Romano scored in traffic in the second overtime for the Leopards. She had three goals and three assists.

Cincinnati 12, East Carolina 11. Camryn Callaghan’s goal with 16 seconds left gave the Bearcats enough room to withstand one last ECU goal.

Iona 13, Siena 12. Kira Virada had six goals and Micaela FitzPatrick had five assists for the Gaels.

Mount St. Mary’s 16, Quinnipiac 15. Mackenzi Furlong (Mount) and EllaGrace Delmond (Quinnipiac) each scored seven goals.
