Division II Women's QF Recap: GVSU Downs Defending Champ UIndy in OT
The Division II women’s NCAA semifinals are set — and there are no shortage of storylines.
Here’s a brief recap of Sunday’s quarterfinal round of the Division II tournament.
WEST CHESTER 10, EAST STROUDSBURG 8
West Chester overcame a one-goal second-half deficit, with Hannah Stanislawczyk scoring the tying and go-ahead goals (plus another right after) to put the Golden Rams ahead. While East Stroudsburg kept it close, West Chester closed out a 10-8 win to advance to the NCAA semifinals.
Meg O’Donnell added a fourth goal in a row after Stanislawczyk went for three straight, putting West Chester up 9-6 with 12:10 remaining. Stanislawczyk scored with 3:25 left for a 10-7 lead, leaving East Stroudsburg little time to make another comeback effort.
Stanislawczyk scored five goals, and Lindsey Monigle had two goals and one assist.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 15, TAMPA 9
Florida Southern scored the first seven goals and never trailed from there, pushing past Tampa 15-9 for a trip to the NCAA semifinals. Giana Murphy scored three of her four goals in that opening run, but Florida Southern was led overall by Izzy Lynch, who scored five times. Sydney O'Neill made 10 saves.
While the 7-0 lead was indicative of a hot start for Florida Southern, Tampa did not simply fold. The Spartans cut it to 8-4 on a Sophi Wrisk woman-up goal with 9:20 left in the third quarter, but Lynch scored three goals in a 4-1 Mocs run to push the lead back up to seven at 12-5.
PACE 14, ADELPHI 5
Pace beat Adelphi handily for the second time this year, scoring the first eight goals and 10 of the first 12 in a 14-5 victory over the Panthers. Angelina Porcello scored a game-high four goals. Kayla Conway (three goals, two assists) and Aleya Corretjer (two goals, three assists) both produced a game-high five points.
Two days after winning its first-ever NCAA tournament game, Pace is now on to the NCAA semifinals — continuing to make program history behind a dynamic offense. Pace lost just twice this season — once in the NE-10 championship to Le Moyne and once to Florida Southern, which remains alive in the semis.
GRAND VALLEY STATE 11, UINDY 10 (OT)
Sydney Stone deposited the final two goals of regulation to force overtime, then Maddy Champagne ended the game in the extra frame, leading upstart Grand Valley State to an 11-10 OT win against defending Division II champion UIndy.
GVSU led 8-7 after the third quarter, but the Greyhounds scored three straight for a 10-8 lead — one by Quinn Malcolm and two by Megan Dunn. But Stone made sure GVSU stayed alive, tying the score with 1:23 left on a feed from Molly Bursinger.
Mekayla Montgomery won the opening draw control by UIndy, but GVSU forced a shot clock violation to earn possession. Champagne was fouled after the clear and buried the free position shot for the win.
