Division III Women's Recap: Lily Ives Goes Behind the Head to Score Winner
Lily Ives didn’t just score the late winner in Sunday’s Division III women’s second round game against MIT — she finished an absolute showstopper.
Ives fought through a crowd to pick up a ground ball, then whipped it behind her head to finish what proved to be the winning goal in Trinity’s 11-10 win over MIT. The Bantams draw NESCAC rival Middlebury in the third round — the regional semifinals — on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.
Like many games, it was one of runs. Trinity led 3-1, then MIT ripped off four straight for a 5-3 lead. Trinity scored six of seven for a 9-6 lead, then MIT scored three in a row to tie it at 9 — Ashley Thomas’ tying score with 7:57 left in the contest came on an assist from Gwen Flusche.
Trinity and MIT then traded scores before Ives went behind the head for the go-ahead strike.
That was hardly the end of the fireworks. Flusche won the ensuing draw for MIT and pushed the pace. Sydney Pyon drew a foul and earned a free position attempt for the tie, but Ali Macdougall saved the attempt to preserve the win.
