Siena Head Coach Abigail Rehfuss Steps Down, Joins Syracuse as Assistant

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse head women’s lacrosse coach Kayla Treanor has announced that Abigail Rehfuss has joined her staff as an assistant coach. Rehfuss has served as the head women’s lacrosse coach at Siena for the past six seasons.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with Kayla and her incredible staff and players,” Rehfuss said. “Syracuse provides a special atmosphere for players, coaches, and families and has long been regarded as one of the best programs in the country. I’m looking forward to joining the Orange family and competing for a National Championship.”

Rehfuss led Siena to three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship game appearances (2019, 2021, 2023) during her time with the Saints and ranks as the program’s all-time leader in wins (53) and winning percentage (.564). She was named the 2021 MAAC Coach of the year after guiding Siena to an 11-3 record and the program’s third trip to the conference title game. Under her tutelage, 25 players earned All-MAAC honors and three members of the Saints received MAAC Player of the Year awards.

Previously, Rehfuss served as the varsity head coach at Shaker High School for two seasons, where she was named the 2016 Times Union Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Bison to the Section II Class A Championship in just her first season at the helm. She also formerly served as the varsity head coach at Bethlehem Central High School (N.Y.) and coached at Roger Williams University (R.I.) as well as club teams in the Albany area.

Rehfuss played collegiately at Loyola (Md.) where she was a two-time captain. She finished her career with 177 points (127g, 50a) and ranks fourth all-time on the Greyhounds’ career draw controls list with 153. Rehfuss, who started all 71 games in which she played in the midfield, also recorded 107 ground balls and 65 caused turnovers.

The Latham, New York native earned All-BIG EAST Conference and Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors and was a 2011 IWLCA second-team All-American and Tewaaraton Award Watch List candidate. She also played professionally in the United Women’s Lacrosse League for the Philadelphia Force and the Boston Storm.

Rehfuss earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary writing and philosophy from Loyola in 2011 and her J.D. from Albany Law School in 2014. She has served as an attorney at The Rehfuss Law Firm, P.C. since 2015. Rehfuss was inducted into Shaker High School’s Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Empire North Lacrosse Association Hall of Fame in October of 2021. Rehfuss’ brother, Stephen, was an All-American attackman who played on the Orange men’s lacrosse team from 2017-21. He earned Syracuse Athletics’ highest honor, the Doris Soladay Award, in 2020, and was named captain and Syracuse’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2021.

The Orange recorded an 18-3 record in 2023 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the second time in three years.
