Sydney Tiemann Breaks NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Career Goals Record

The NCAA statistics office will be doing a lot of editing to the Division II women’s lacrosse record book this offseason following a full-fledged assault from multiple fronts in 2024.

To start, Maryville’s Sydney Tiemann is the new career leader in goals scored, breaking the record of 310 established by Mercy’s Hunter Isnardi (2016-19). Tiemann, who played two full seasons at McKendree before transferring to Maryville in 2023, now has 314 career goals (and counting).

The senior attacker tied Isnardi’s record on a free-position goal with 12:41 left in the second quarter of Maryville’s 23-7 victory over Quincy in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament on Friday. She then tallied the record-breaker eight minutes later, scoring at the 4:41 mark off an assist from Natalie Tomljenovic.

Tiemann will have one more GLVC tournament game Sunday and potentially four more games in the NCAA tournament to continue adding to her record. Maryville (17-0 overall) is all but assured of receiving one of the four spots from the Midwest Region for the NCAA tournament.

Tiemann also has a chance to break her own Division II single-season record of 115 goals, which she established last year.  With five goals in Friday’s win, she currently has 97 goals through 17 games.

“She is a competitor, first and foremost,” Maryville head coach Melissa Gyllenborg said. “She never takes a play off, and her work ethic is unmatched. She was a game changer for us.”

Tiemann’s single-season record from 2023 was almost wiped out this spring by Paige Murphy, a freshman at Emmanuel (Ga.) who tallied 113 goals in her first collegiate season. Murphy became just the fourth player in Division II history to score at least 100 goals in a season, and the only freshman to ever do so. She finished with 151 total points in 2024, the fourth highest single-season total in Division II history.  Emmanuel, a member of Conference Carolinas, finished the year with a 13-5 record.

It's also notable that in addition to Tiemann’s record-setting exploits, two other active players are also in range of joining the elite 300 Goals Club. Seniors Emily Mitarotonda of East Stroudsburg (283 goals) and Hannah Stanislawczyk of West Chester (272 goals) are within striking range of the milestone, with several games remaining for both players.

How special is the 2024 season? It’s possible to have three players reach the 300-goal mark this season, when it had only been done once previously in Division II history.
