Women's Tewaaraton Stock Watch: Three New Faces in the Top 5

Upsets, a nerve-racking battle between national powerhouses and fiery offenses defined the second week of the Division I women’s lacrosse season.

With marquee matchups like Northwestern-v-Boston College, North Carolina-v-Florida and Syracuse-v-Maryland, many of the country’s biggest stars have already collided — and it’s only February.

This week’s Tewaaraton Stock Watch features just two players frrom last week’s list: Northwestern’s Izzy Scane and Syracuse’s Meghan Tyrrell. The dynamic attackers dominated this past weekend. Scane scored 10 goals against Notre Dame and four in an upset of Boston College, and Tyrrell tallied 11 points as she led the Orange past Maryland on Friday.

Here’s a look at this week’s top five contenders for the Tewaaraton Award.

1. Izzy Scane, A Northwestern

After spending 2022 off the field with an ACL injury, Scane is back in full force. She tied her own program record for single-game goals (10) against Notre Dame, then she went on to seal the Wildcats’ upset victory against Boston College with four goals in the second half. Once again, it’s only February, but Scane seems to already be in midseason form. She’s going to be a headache for defenses all over the country as Northwestern continues its push for the postseason.

2. Jenn Medjid, A, Boston College

Medjid has played a central role leading the Eagles’ attack this season. Medjid has only competed in two of Boston College’s three matchups so far, as she spent last Wednesday’s UMass matchup on the sideline with a bruised leg. But her early performances against USC and Northwestern were both dynamic. She led the Eagles in scoring in both outings, tallying five goals against the Women of Troy and four against the Wildcats.

3. Meaghan Tyrrell, A, Syracuse

The Orange are 3-0, and Tyrrell has been a huge part of their fast starrt. Tyrrell starred in the first week of the season with eight points –– including six assists –– against Northwestern. She had another stellar performance last weekend, notching six goals and five assists as Syracuse handled Maryland. Tyrrell will be key to anchoring the Orange attack as they put the pieces together following a series of injuries in 2022.

4. Ellie Masera, M, Stony Brook

Masera dominated as a sophomore in 2022, totaling 100 draw controls and 58 goals. She built on that with a powerful performance in the Seawolves’ season opener against Michigan last weekend, tallying four goals, one caused turnover, three ground balls and seven draw controls. Her efforts were key to a dominant 17-10 victory against a ranked opponent. The USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year, Masera should continue to turn heads.

5. Sarah Reznick, G, Florida

Reznick is already beginning to build on a masterful 2022 campaign with the Gators. She was key as Florida dismantled Michigan on February 12, notching 12 saves while allowing 8 goals. While North Carolina easily handled the Gators last weekend, Reznick still delivered a defensive masterclass. She made 14 saves while allowing 12 goals, posting a .538 save rate. This marks Reznick’s third season on the official Tewaaraton Award Watchlist, and she’s certain to continue living up to the hype.
