The only Division I men’s lacrosse game involving a nationally ranked team Sunday did not disappoint. In a duel of freshman goalies in South Bend, host Notre Dame survived an upset bid by Detroit Mercy, riding the hot hand of midfielder Bryan Costabile to a 10-7 victory at Loftus Sports Center.

The Irish, ranked No. 6 nationally, struggled to solve Titans goalie Logan Shamblin (11 saves), whose four third-quarter saves came as Detroit Mercy built a 6-4 lead. Costabile was the only Notre Dame shooter who could consistently beat Shamblin, finishing with a career-high five goals and two assists.

Irish goalie Matt Schmidt, also making his first career start, helped turn the tide with a point-blank save late in the third quarter. Schmidt sprawled to his right to deny Titans attackman Brett Erskine on the doorstep and started a Notre Dame fast break going the other way. Mikey Wynne stuck a low bouncer from the outside to finish the break, a two-goal swing that made it 6-5 instead of 7-4.

The Irish pulled away with five unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter.

Schmidt finished with nine saves, including four in the first quarter, during which Notre Dame committed 10 of its 21 turnovers.

Attackman Matthew Vangalen led Detroit Mercy with two goals and three assists.
