NETANYA, Israel — Attackman Matt Danowski and goalie John Galloway have been named as captains for the 2018 U.S. Men's National Team.
The team voted on Wednesday night and U.S. team head coach John Danowski informed the squad of the results on Thursday afternoon at the team's hotel before heading to Netanya Stadium for its opening game in the Federation of International Lacrosse Men's World Championship against the Iroquois Nationals (ESPN2, 1:30 pm Eastern).
Matt Danowski, an assistant coach at Duke, is playing on his first U.S. senior team, but helped the 2003 U.S. U19 team to a gold medal when he was named the tournament MVP after leading the team in scoring with 17 goals and 10 assists.
The 2007 Tewaaraton Award winner at Duke, Danowski was a four-time All-American (first team three times) in college and graduated as the NCAA's all-time leading scorer with 353 points, a record now held by Lyle Thompson. Since joining the MLL in 2008, he has scored nearly 400 points and been named All-MLL three times. He has 17 points in five games for the Chesapeake Bayhawks this summer.
Galloway, the head coach at Jacksonville, is also playing on his first U.S. senior team. Galloway set a NCAA record with 59 career victories at Syracuse and helped the Orange to NCAA championships in 2008 and 2009. Galloway was the National Goaltender of the Year in 2010 and 2011 and a Tewaaraton finalist in 2011.
In the MLL, Galloway has twice been named the Goaltender of the Year (2014 and 2016) and helped the Rochester Rattlers reach the league's title game in 2014 and 2015. He has compiled a 7-0 record for league-leading Dallas so far this summer.
