Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The U.S. fell short in its bid for a World Indoor Lacrosse Championship upset Thursday, losing to the Iroquois Nationals 9-7 in the semifinals at Langley Events Centre in Langley, British Columbia.
The U.S. was hoping to qualify for its first gold medal game in the quadrennial competition that dates back to 2003. Instead, it will vie for its fifth bronze medal Saturday. The Americans will play England at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST).
2. Canada cruised to 21-4 win over England in the second semifinal, setting up a Canada-Iroquois title tilt Saturday at 8 p.m. PST (11 p.m. EST). The two teams have met in every WILC championship final, with Canada prevailing to take all four previous gold medals. The Canadians have never lost in WILC competition. They’re 28-0 all-time.
Mark Matthews (two goals, eight assists) and Ben McIntosh (three goals, seven assists) led Canada with 10 points apiece.
3. Free movement will now be the standard in women’s and girls’ lacrosse, no matter the level of play. US Lacrosse announced Thursday the youth rules changes for 2020, the most significant of which is the allowance of free movement by players on a whistle or stoppage of play. It brings the youth game in line with rules already in place at the college and high school levels. The NFHS added free movement to its rulebook in July.
