Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The weekend in college lacrosse served up several affirmations.
-
Northwestern looks unstoppable and Izzy Scane has to be considered a front-runner for the Tewaaraton Award. Not since the dynasty days of 2005-12 have we seen a Wildcats team run so roughshod over the competition. No. 3 Northwestern throttled No. 8 Maryland 25-12 and improved to 8-0 behind a nine-goal, three-assist performance from Scane, who is averaging more than eight points per game. The Big Ten rivals tussle again today at 1 p.m. Eastern (Big Ten Network).
-
After Northwestern, the Big Ten women’s lacrosse race is wide open. Riding a six-game losing streak, Ohio State swept a two-game set against No. 10 Penn State in Columbus — winning 15-12 on Friday and 11-9 on Saturday.
-
ACC men’s lacrosse is must-see TV. No. 7 Virginia and No. 9 Notre Dame provided further proof Saturday, with the Cavaliers prevailing 12-11 in South Bend.
-
Maryland is the clear Big Ten men’s lacrosse front-runner and warrants consideration alongside Duke and North Carolina as being the best and most complete teams in the country. The No. 2-ranked Terps defeated No. 6 Rutgers for the second time in three weeks, using a 7-0 run to push past the Scarlet Knights 13-9.
-
The archrivals are all right. The No. 4 Army and No. 15 Navy men’s lacrosse teams emerged from long layoffs no worse for the wear. The Black Knights handled Holy Cross 13-3 and the Midshipmen pulled away from Bucknell 13-10 after both squads were rendered idle for weeks due to COVID-19 protocols.
-
Neither sweeping faceoff rules changes nor more than a year without live-game reps has taken any shine off TD Ierlan’s game. Playing for his third college team, the NCAA record-setting faceoff specialist went a cool 14-for-14 in his Denver debut Saturday.
2. The Premier Lacrosse League’s waiver period starts today and Cannons LC will have the first crack at a player pool still chock full of elite talent — evidenced by Phil Shore’s all-undrafted team consisting of players left on the table in last week’s entry draft.
