Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. Ricky Fried, the two-time World Cup gold medal-winning coach of the U.S. women’s national team, will replace Cindy Timchal as coach of the WPLL’s Philadelphia Ride. Lax Sports Network, which will broadcast the league’s inaugural draft tonight (7:30 p.m. ET), tweeted the news Tuesday. Timchal, who led Navy to the NCAA women’s lacrosse final four in May, stepped down due to schedule conflicts.

2. The Minto Cup final is underway in Brampton, Ontario. The best-of-five series for Canada’s Junior A box lacrosse championship pits the defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs against the Six Nations Arrows, who won Game 1 handily Tuesday with a 12-7 victory. Tehoka Nanticoke, an incoming freshman at Albany, scored four goals and won 13 of 14 faceoffs for the Arrows. Austin Staats (Onondaga Community College) had five goals. Adanacs goalie Christian Del Bianco (Calgary Roughnecks), sensational throughout the round robin, made 35 saves and scored a goal in the loss. A British Columbia team has not won a Minto Cup on Ontario soil since 1977.

In other Canadian summer box news:

  • The Peterborough Lakers defeated the Six Nations Chiefs 10-7 in Game 1 of the best-of-seven Major Series Lacrosse final Tuesday at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. Adam Jones (Toronto Rock) led the Lakers with four goals. Goalie Evan Kirk (Saskatchewan Rush) made 40 saves. Both Jones and Kirk were the subjects of major National Lacrosse League trades this summer.

  • The New Westminster Salmonbellies took a 2-1 series lead in the Western Lacrosse Association final with a 14-4 win Tuesday over the Victoria Shamrocks at Queens Park Arena. Logan Schuss (Vancouver Stealth) netted nine points (six goals, three assists) and Kevin Crowley (New England Black Wolves) added eight (three goals, five assists) in the victory. Salmonbellies goalie Alex Buque, acquired by the Buffalo Bandits this summer, made an astounding 52 saves on 56 shots.

  • The MSL and WLA champions will meet in the Mann Cup for Canada’s Senior A championship in British Columbia. As evidenced above, many NLL stars dot these rosters.

  • The Orangeville Northmen captured their second consecutive Founders Cup (Junior B) title over the weekend, defeating the Red Deer Rampage 18-7 in Saskatoon.

  • Boston University men’s lacrosse assistant coach Max Silberlicht is the head coach of the Latvian national team with its sights set on the 2018 FIL World Championship.

  • It’s rare for small college products to shine in MLL. Nazareth grad Drew Simoneau breaks the mold as the faceoff specialist for the Rochester Rattlers.

  • Basketball Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore, known as the “A Train” and for his tremendous size (7-foot-2) and durability (playing in 670 consecutive games), brandished a lacrosse stick Tuesday at Jacksonville, where he is an assistant to the university president. This July 20 article denoting his acquaintance with Dolphins commit Aaron Higdon explains the connection.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

StringKing’s hype video for the Peterborough Lakers gives you a good sense of the skill you’ll see on display if you follow the MSL finals and the subsequent Mann Cup series.

And while we’re watching Canadian players put us to shame, MLL Rookie of the Year and likely NLL No. 1 overall pick Josh Byrne makes scoring with no angle look easy.
