Dom Starsia, a National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coach and occasional contributor to US Lacrosse Magazine, can now add author to his resume.
Starsia’s book, “I Hope You Will Be Very Happy” — a title he attributes to something his wife, Krissy, said to him in 1992 when Virginia coach Jim Adams retired — was released last week on Amazon.
We asked Starsia, now a member of the Premier Lacrosse League’s advisory board after coaching Chrome for its inaugural season, about the inspiration and timing for this book.
This project actually began when I first committed to coach in the PLL around the first of the year. They insisted that I begin to tweet and my simple response was, “OK, tell me what it is and show me how to do it.”
I slowly began to enjoy participating in the Twitter world, and it was late spring when someone commented, “You need to write a book.” This person happened to be a publisher, and when I sent him a series of articles I had written over the past few years, he took on the project and pulled all this together.
It is still a little hard to believe that something I have written is now available on Amazon.
I am forever grateful to everyone who helped make this happen.
From the back cover:
“I first thought of playing lacrosse in the fall of my freshman year at Brown in 1970. Coming up on 50 years in the game, I have had a number of friends and fans who told me that I needed to write a book about a life in the game. Never quite convinced that my life was that interesting to begin with, I have become preoccupied with sharing my experience with those who might value and benefit from some practical observations.
“What you will find within here are letters to players, parents and fans, a series on leadership that applies to both athletes and coaches, essays on the zone defense that carried us to the national championship in 2011, a family situation that provided an opportunity to make a strategic adjustment that led to another championship in 2003, the language of lacrosse, the value of being a great passer and many others that recount personal stories and life lessons that have shaped my career.
“My goal is that you will find something here that will help you in your journey.”
