Florida Southern scored the first eight goals and blanked Adelphi in the first half, defeating the top-ranked Panthers 8-4 at the Barnett Athletic Complex in Lakeland, Fla., on Thursday night.
The 14th-ranked Moccasins, coming off of a crushing double-overtime loss to Indianapolis in which they coughed up the ball and the lead in the final six seconds of regulation, were in control from the start. Six different players scored during Florida Southern’s methodical first-half run.
Adelphi, the reigning NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse champion, turned the tables in the second half. The Panthers (1-1) shut out the Moccasins, and Kole Pollock scored three goals in just over four minutes.
But Florida Southern had dug too deep a hole for Adelphi, which did not score again until Christina Ferrara converted a Gianna Bifulco feed with 14 seconds left.
Riley Bannatyne and Sammy Gorrasi paced the Moccasins with two goals apiece. Goalie Patricia Werker made 11 saves.
Each team committed 23 turnovers.
The Panthers shot 0-for-7 on free positions.
