After opening the season with a 16-1 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral (Calif.) on Feb. 26, the Wildcats had a tougher time getting past two-time defending Southern Section CIF champion Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.). They edged the Cubs, 8-7, on Mark Stephens’ game-winner with 13 seconds left in the matchup of ranked teams Thursday. The Raiders open their season March 14 at home against Mullen (Colo.). Regis returns the bulk of its top players from last season and looks to get back to championship form after failing to defend their 2016 title last year. Previous: 2
3. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 0-0
The Falcons face a tough challenge Friday when they open the season against Lawrenceville (N.J.), but they survived the matchup last year, winning 10-9. Torrey Pines then plays Texas-power Highland Park before getting into the in-state schedule March 16 against St. Ignatius. Previous: 3
4. San Ramon Valley (Calif.), 3-0
The Wolves rolled through their first three opponents, outscoring them 39-11, including a 14-0 win over Dougherty Valley (Calif.) on Friday. In an 11-4 win over Marin Catholic (Calif.), Drew Erickson led the way with five goals and two assists. SRV will get its first big challenge Tuesday against St. Ignatius. Previous: 4

The defending San Diego Section Open champion Mavericks were successful in their first game with nine new starters, opening with a 10-6 win over Rancho Bernardo (Calif.) on Friday. They return to the field Tuesday against La Jolla. Previous: 5

The Knights overcame former No. 6 and two-time reigning Southern Section champions Loyola-Los Angeles, 12-11, in overtime to open the season Feb. 24 and then sandwiched another 12-11 victory against Oak Park (Calif.) around an easier decision against Santiago (Calif.). Foothill came back from a 9-6 deficit in the fourth quarter against Loyola – which beat Foothill 13-4 in the Southern Section final last year – and won on Troy Hofer’s game-winner in overtime. Andrew Cumming, Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.)
The sophomore totaled 10 goals and nine assists through the first three games, but most notably helped keep Foothill afloat against two-time defending Southern Section champion Loyola-Los Angeles in the opener. He tallied five goals and three assists in regulation before Troy Hofer sealed the 12-11 win in overtime.
