Two years ago, professional women’s lacrosse did not exist. Now, there are two leagues.

Michele DeJuliis, the former commissioner of United Women’s Lacrosse, has founded the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League. The WPLL is set to launch with four teams in summer 2018. It also will include a developmental program to groom future professional players.

“The game just continues to get better and better. The athletes are bigger, stronger, faster and more skilled. The pace of the games that we watch today is incredible. The WPLL will continue to push the boundaries and innovate the way the game is played,” DeJuliis said in an announcement Thursday. “Providing an opportunity for players to freely showcase their expert talent, while also connecting them with our future generation of players in a meaningful way on and off the field, is the very foundation of the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League.”

DeJuliis has tabbed three-time U.S. World Cup team goalie Devon Wills as the WPLL’s director of player relations, giving athletes representation in the league’s decision-making process.

“With the way the game is growing, young players need a professional women’s lacrosse league where the values of both the players and the organization are aligned,” said Wills, who also is the top assistant coach at USC.

The announcement did not make clear if or how the WPLL would accommodate players already competing in UWLX, also a summer league. Wills was one of the faces of UWLX in its inaugural season in 2016, leading the Long Island Sound to the league championship and earning MVP honors. UWLX opened its second season over Memorial Day weekend near the NCAA championships in Attleboro, Mass.

The inaugural WPLL draft will be in August, followed by an exhibition weekend in the fall.
