Another Yale assistant is on the move. Andrew Stimmel, who served as the Yale offensive coordinator from 2017-2019, has accepted the head coaching position at Marquette, according to Inside Lacrosse.
Stimmel becomes the second Yale assistant to take a head coach job this offseason — coming days after Andrew Baxter was hired at Fairfield. Both were instrumental in Yale’s back-to-back national title game appearances.
He replaces former Marquette head coach Joe Amplo, who left to take the Navy job on June 5. Stimmel served on Amplo’s staff as defensive coordinator during the 2016 season, one that saw the Golden Eagles win the BIG East tournament title.
"Marquette's unparalleled commitment to building an exceptional lacrosse program while producing elite leaders is second to none and I couldn't be more excited to continue that tradition," Stimmel said in a press release. "I am blessed to have had great mentors in my life in Andy Shay, Joe Amplo and Nick Myers who have all taught me the value of accountability, belief and work ethic; all things I feel the Marquette community embodies making this a perfect fit for me and my family."
Stimmel will take over a Marquette program fresh off two straight 6-8 finishes. The Golden Eagles most recently won the Big East in 2017, when it upset Denver and beat Providence to advance to a second straight NCAA tournament.
Prior to his experience at Marquette, Stimmel served on the Yale defense in 2014 and 2015. In addition, he led the Grove City College (Pa.) MCLA program for two seasons, being named the MCLA Division II Coach of the Year in 2013.
During his playing days, Stimmel was a two-year defensive starter at Ohio State. In addition to his college coaching experience, Stimmel is an assistant on the staff of the U.S. U19 men's national team that will compete in Ireland next year.
