A couple of crossover games between well respected programs on top of key regional matchups prompted significant changes in the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ National Top 25. McDonogh (Md.) won a meeting of top five powers over St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), Loyola (Ill.) lost a pair of games on the East Coast to open the door for others to slide up and four new teams, paced by Garden City (N.Y.), join the Top 25 after moving up in the Northeast rankings.
It’s a light holiday slate of games this week, but there are still some important ones, led by McDonogh in a top three battle with No. 1 St. Paul’s (Md.) on Monday — that result will be reflected in next week’s update.
The Northeast saw some changes in its Top 10. While Northport (N.Y.) and New Canaan (Conn.) continue to roll, St. Anthony’s suffered their first defeat to McDonogh (Md.) and Darien (Conn.) earned a measure of revenge for a series of close losses to Manhasset to move up in this week’s rankings. Garden City (N.Y.) and Wilton (Conn.) jumped into the Top 10 on the strength of their good showings and Sacred Heart (Conn.) and Victor (N.Y.) played like Top 25 national teams in significant wins.
The Mid-Atlantic remained unchanged through the first seven teams with all having perfect weeks. St. Paul’s (Md.) and McDonogh (Md.) were set to play April 11 for first place in the IAAM A Conference and in the rankings. Glenelg Country (Md.) cemented its spot at No. 4 with a strong showing in a win over Notre Dame (Md.) which has only lost to teams ranked ahead of them. Archbishop Carroll (Pa.), on the strength of a solid win over Agnes Irwin (Pa.), moved up one spot, and Episcopal (Pa.) moved into the Top 10 after remaining perfect in eight games with another narrow win.
The South Region has Florida teams into their playoffs already so it’s an intense time. American Heritage-Delray (Fla.), Steinbrenner (Fla.), and Lake Highland Prep (Fla.) are all top seeds in their respective districts. Lake Highland and Bartram Trail (Fla.) both climbed in the region rankings with good endings to the regular season.
The Midwest will feature a 1-2 matchup with Loyola (Ill.) meeting unbeaten New Trier (Ill.). Loyola was perfect until a trip to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes’s (Va.) Spring Fling weekend. The region remains the same except undefeated Guerin Catholic (Ind.) joins their Top 10.
The West is unchanged through the top three of unbeatens Colorado Academy (Colo.) and St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) along with 13-1 Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.). Scripps Ranch (Calif.) and Park City move up after both remained undefeated. Issaquah (Wash.), joins their Top 10 after winning a battle of unbeatens.
