John Zulberti, who won two NCAA championships at Syracuse and was named a four-time All-American from 1986-89, has died at 54, the school announced Monday.

Lindsay Kramer of Syracuse.com reported that Liam Banks, a former Orange player, was told that Zulberti drowned.

An all-time Syracuse great as a two-time Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award winner, Zulberti was known for his on-field flair — in part because of his signature Chuck Taylor’s.

Zulberti scored a point in every game of his college career, a 60-game stretch that still stands as a Syracuse record. His 267 career points are sixth in Syracuse history, and his 158 assists are second in program history.

“John was an outstanding player and teammate and a true Syracuse lacrosse legend,” Syracuse head coach Gary Gait said in a statement. “All of us at Syracuse have his family, friends and those who knew him in our thoughts during this time.”

Zulberti — nicknamed “Z” — was instrumental in the booming growth of lacrosse in Atlanta, where he coached with the Thunder club program.
