Long Island University is living up to its namesake.

LIU scored seven goals in the fourth quarter to stun host Hofstra 14-11 in the inaugural Long Island Cup on Friday — the Sharks’ first win in the series since 1987 (as C.W. Post). LIU will face Stony Brook in the tournament championship Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern (FloLive). Hofstra plays St. John’s in the consolation game.

The Sharks (3-1) shut out the Pride in the first quarter but trailed 10-7 in the fourth before their offense got rolling. They scored four goals in a span of 5:35 to take an 11-10 lead.

Hofstra’s James Philbin scored his fourth goal of the game to tie it at 11 with 3:53 left, but LIU answered with the eventual game-winner just 50 seconds later — Marcin Maleski (four goals) from Blake Behlen.

Behlen then capitalized on a beautiful extra-man set, finishing a Richie LaCalandra feed in front to make it a two-goal lead with 1:45 remaining. LaCalandra scored an empty-netter with 33 seconds left to ice the game.

The Long Island Cup features Hofstra, LIU, St. John’s and Stony Brook, the four Division I men's lacrosse programs located on Long Island. Similar to ice hockey tournaments such as The Beanpot, the competition lasts two rounds, with the second round featuring the championship and consolation games Sunday.

Stony Brook defeated St. John’s 17-10 in Friday’s nightcap. Matt Anderson and Kevin Mack scored four goals each and Renz Conlon won 17 of 22 as the Seawolves improved to 3-0.

NOTABLE

• Mount St. Mary’s picked up just its second-ever win over UMBC on Friday, limiting the Retrievers to just one goal in the first half and holding on for a 9-8 victory. UMBC had three chances to tie the game on its final possession, but goalie Griffin McGinley made a save on Mike Doughty and Jordan Galloway and Brett Baucia both shot wide. Cormac Giblin led the Mount with three goals.

• Four Sacred Heart players scored two goals apiece and Sal Miccio had a goal and three assists to lead the Pioneers to a 13-10 win over Quinnipiac. Demitri George was a bright spot for the Bobcats, winning 20 of 27 faceoffs.
