No. 11 Michigan bounced back from its first loss of the season by scoring the final three goals of the game to edge Johns Hopkins 9-7 on Friday afternoon on Homewood Field in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The Wolverines improved to 8-1 for the season and 1-0 in the league while Hopkins dropped its third straight game, falling to 4-4 and 0-1.

Maeve Barker’s goal with 9:57 to play in the game gave Johns Hopkins its first lead, 7-6, in the contest since the first quarter. However, Michigan’s Julia Schwabe answered just 55 seconds later to tie the game 7.

Kaley Thompson gave the Wolverines the lead with 5:28 remaining and Caroline Davis sealed the game on an extra-player opportunity with 2:53 left.

Kaitlyn Mead led Michigan with three points on two goals and an assist and the Wolverines also got two goals each from Davis, Erin Garvey and Thompson. Arielle Weissman made seven saves to earn the victory.

Georgia Esmond and Shelby Harrison each scored twice for the Blue Jays and Kathleen Garvey made seven saves.

McGovern Powers Virginia Over Pitt

Ashlyn McGovern poured in a career-best seven goals as No. 14 Virginia downed Pitt 17-7 to pick up its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the season.

Pitt, in its first varsity season, just missed out in one-goal losses to league rivals Virginia Tech and Duke, and trailed Virginia by just one goal after the first quarter. However, the Cavaliers dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 7-2, and then scored six more goals in the third quarter to pull away.

McGovern, a senior, has now scored multiple goals in nine of the Cavaliers 10 games and has 32 for the season. Freshman midfielder Rachel Clark added four goals and two assists for Virginia. Junior goalie Ashlyn Vernon made six saves while allowing six goals to pick up the victory.

Virginia is now 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the league while Pitt fell to 4-5 and 0-4.

Masera Shines as Stony Brook Wins Island Battle

Ellie Masera scored six goals as No. 6 Stony Brook doubled up Long Island rival Hofstra 12-6 on Friday night in Hempstead, N.Y.

Hofstra trailed just 6-5 midway through the third quarter, but Jaden Hampel’s goal with 6:51 left in the quarter ignited a six-goal Stony Brook run over the next 20 minutes.

Stony Brook improved to 4-2 for the season and has now won the last five meetings over its neighboring rival.

Amanda Guerra led Hofstra with three goals, but the Pride saw their five-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 6-2 this year.

USC Routs Cal, Sets Up Stanford Showdown

No. 13 USC responded to an early 2-0 deficit, by going on a 14-1 blitz over the majority of the first half to defeat Cal 19-9. The Trojans, now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-12, will complete its road trip to the Bay Area on Sunday with a matchup against the other unbeaten team in the league, Stanford.

Kelsey Huff led USC with six goals and Isabelle Vitale added four goals and three assists. Kate Devir went the majority of the way in goal for the Trojans, making four saves while allowing just five goals to pick up the victory.

• Ali Baiocco had five goals and two assists and Ashley Humphrey had two goals and six assists as Stanford won its third straight game, beating Pac-12 rival Arizona State 19-11. Kara Rahaim made 14 saves, helping the Cardinal improve to 4-4 and 2-0 in the league.

• UMass converted just 2-of-16 free position shots, but had enough over firepower to beat Dartmouth 13-9. The Minutewomen improved to 6-2 behind four goals from Kendra Harbinger.

• Lilly Siskind had a career-best 10 points (7g, 3a) as Old Dominion outscored Niagara 18-17 on Friday afternoon in Norfolk, Va. Corrinne Statton scored the game-winner in overtime for the Monarchs.

• Rosella Nardi had five goals and two assists as Delaware State picked up its first win of the season, beating HBCU rival Howard 17-8 on Friday night in Dover, Del. Moe Brown made saves to earn the win for the Hornets.

• Colorado was pushed by Oregon, but snapped its two-game losing streak with a 13-11 victory over the Ducks. Sadie Grozier led Colorado with four goals.

• Kylie Nause had a career-high six goals as Cincinnati edged Central Michigan 12-11. Nause now has 37 goals in the Bearcats first nine games.

• Fourteen different players scored goals as Coastal Carolina routed Winthrop 19-7 on Friday. The Chanticleers scored 12 goals in the first quarter and led 17-2 at the break.
