All it took was a split dodge in overtime of the fourth game of the season for Molly Garrett to get Michigan into the win column.

One of the early surprises of 2021 has been Michigan’s decline from No. 9 in the preseason to 0-3 and unranked after last weekend, but the Wolverines could be back on the upswing.

Garrett split through the middle of the defense and fired home the game-winning tally on a laser to the bottom-right corner of the cage as Michigan downed No. 18 Rutgers 12-11 at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.

Garrett led Michigan (1-3) with four goals, and Caitlin Muir added three goals with one assist.

With just under three minutes to play, Rutgers (3-2) took an 11-10 lead on Taralyn Naslonski’s goal. That’s when Caroline Bean fed Muir behind the net, and the senior wrapped around the crease and scored, tying the score at 11.

After Rutgers won the opening draw of overtime, Garrett caused a turnover. Muir took a shot that was saved by Alonna Gliksman, but in the attempt to clear, Kaitlyn Mead forced another turnover, which set up Garrett’s winner.

Stony Brook Opens America East Play with Win

No. 7 Stony Brook rebounded from last weekend’s 16-6 loss to No. 2 Syracuse by beating UMBC 15-8, pushing its conference winning streak to 43 games.

Taryn Ohlmiller scored five goals — including tallies 42 seconds apart in the first three minutes of play — and Ally Kennedy scored three times. Haley Hunt, making her first collegiate start, made six saves.

Kaelyn Hart scored twice, including this slick BTB.
