Two Big East programs parted ways with their men’s lacrosse coaches on Wednesday.
Chris Gabrielli, who was the program’s head coach for 10 seasons, has resigned as the head coach at Providence. Gabrielli led the Friars to five consecutive Big East tournament appearances, a streak that was snapped this season on the heels of a 6-8 season in which the team went 1-4 in conference play.
Meanwhile, Jason Miller has resigned after 16 seasons leading St. John’s. Miller’s teams compiled a record of 67-145, including a 2-12 mark in 2022. The Red Storm went 20-71 in conference play under Miller.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced today (May 4) that lacrosse coach Chris Gabrielli has resigned. Gabrielli served as the Friar lacrosse coach for the last 10 seasons.
“I want to thank Chris and his staff for all their efforts over the last 10 seasons,” Driscoll said. ”We will begin a national search immediately. Friar lacrosse has a strong infrastructure, state-of-the-art facilities and unwavering support. In addition, the BIG EAST is a nationally recognized lacrosse conference. We have high expectations for our lacrosse team, which includes competing for championships and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunity I was provided to lead this program, especially during a phase when the College transitioned to such a high commitment level toward lacrosse,” Gabrielli said. “I will forever cherish the lifelong relationships that I have formed with our current and former players, assistant coaches, support staff, administrators, alumni and fellow coaches on campus. I know that I have grown as a person and as a coach after 10 years at Providence College.”
ST. JOHN’S
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s Athletic Director Mike Cragg announced on Wednesday that the University has accepted Jason Miller’s resignation, after 16 years as the men’s lacrosse team’s head coach.
A national search for the fourth head coach in program history will begin immediately. Red Storm assistant coaches Chris Fisher and John DeTommaso will serve as interim co-head coaches during the transition.
“We sincerely thank Coach Miller for his decade and a half of service to St. John’s Athletics,” said Cragg. “Jason’s dedication to his student-athletes both on and off the field of competition has greatly benefitted countless young men in so many facets of life.”
In 16 seasons, Miller’s teams compiled a record of 67-145, including a 2-12 mark in 2022. The Red Storm went 20-71 in conference play under Miller.
During his time in Queens, Miller coached 29 All-BIG EAST selections and 10 NCAA North-South All-Star Game participants.
Miller’s best season came in 2013, when the Red Storm went 9-4, highlighted by a 12-10 win over No. 1 Notre Dame in South Bend. The year prior in 2012, St. John’s took down the No. 2 Fighting Irish in the BIG EAST Semifinals before falling to Syracuse in the title game. The Johnnies went 8-7 in 2012, finishing .500 or better for the first time since the program was reinstated in 2005.
Those 2012 and 2013 teams were led by Kieran McArdle, a three-time All-American and two-time BIG EAST Attackman of the Year, who has gone onto success in a number of professional leagues.
Miller’s teams were often standouts in the classroom, earning seven BIG EAST Academic Excellence Awards, the last of which came in 2020. Two Johnnies were named to USILA Scholar All-America Teams under Miller: Mark DiFrangia in 2015 and Aidan Marron in 2019.
