Izzy Scane is taking the lacrosse world by storm — and then dodging it and putting the ball in the back of the cage. She’s the most prolific goal scorer in college lacrosse this year, and she could be key to a potential national title run for Northwestern.
The product of Clarkston, Mich., grew up playing lacrosse with her three brothers and developed a competitive spirit that made her hard to beat as soon as she picked up a stick. She watched as Northwestern’s dynasty continued, and she wanted to make her mark at Evanston, Ill. — just a few hours away from her hometown.
“When I first started playing lacrosse, I said, ‘I’m going to Northwestern. I’m going to go to the best lacrosse program there is in the country,’” Scane said. “‘I’m going to be the best I can be.’”
Now a star and Tewaaraton candidate for the Wildcats, Scane is hoping to lead her team to the top of the women’s lacrosse world. She spoke with Sheehan Stanwick Burch on the latest episode of “The Stick Drop,” detailing her lacrosse origins, where she got her nicknames and why the U.S. U19 process was so important in her development.

Scane’s drive to succeed started early but was reinforced when she was cut from the U.S. U19 national team (led by her current college coach, Kelly Amonte Hiller) during the tryout process. She had tried out as a defender, the position that Hiller had her pegged for entering Northwestern.
However, Scane soon moved to attack during her freshman fall and dropped 62 goals during the spring. The decision to bring Scane back into the U19 fold was an easy one, and Scane made sure Hiller did not regret that decision, scoring 21 goals to lead the U.S. to gold.
“That was definitely a point where I shifted gears in terms of mindset, to work hard and play as confidently as I could,” she said. “Thankfully, it all worked out.”
Two years later, Scane is leading the nation with 70 points on 56 goals and 14 assists — a resume fit for a Tewaaraton frontrunner.
