Grant Ament’s college lacrosse career officially ended on Sunday, when he announced that he would not use an extra year of eligibility at Penn State.
His 2020 season officially ended weeks ago, when he and his teammates heard from coach Jeff Tambroni that the NCAA canceled the remainder of the spring season. An unceremonious end to a historic career.
Ament’s legacy in NCAA lacrosse will continue for decades. He’s the NCAA’s single-season leader with 96 assists (2019), and he’s the Big Ten’s career leader in assists. His ability to find open shooters has set him apart from almost any other player in the history of college lacrosse.

But he’s ready for a new chapter. If he didn’t redshirt the 2018 season, the story may have been different.
“I know that myself and some other fifth years have talked about this,” Ament said, regarding the extra year. “[I have] zero regrets with anything. I know that I left my heart out on the field with everything I did. It comes to a point when you are ready to move on, and I am kind of at that point.”
Ament will likely head for the Premier Lacrosse League next, but the lacrosse community is not done singing the praises of his college career.
The Penn State star spoke with Paul Carcaterra for Episode 6 of this season of “Overtime,” sharing in a candid interview the reasons why he chose not to return to Penn State, how he became a stellar passer and his non-lacrosse influences.
