Senior attackman Morgan Cheek posted an impressive 18 points in two games in one week, leading Harvard to a 19-18 overtime victory against Boston University on Tuesday and a 10-8 win over Dartmouth on Saturday for Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week honors.
Trailing by two at halftime, by five after the third quarter and by six less than a minute into the final period, the Crimson exploded against the Terriers thanks to a seven-point effort from Cheek in the fourth quarter.
He scored Harvard’s first goal of the period, assisted Joe Lang twice two minutes later and then sparked its final six-goal run to end the quarter. Cheek scored the first goal in the offensive spurt and assisted on four of the last five goals. He then secured the game-winning, unassisted tally in overtime.
Cheek finished with 13 points against Boston University, which set a new program record, besting the previous mark set by Devin Dwyer ’16 and Mike Eckert ’96. The 30 points combined between the starting attackmen – 13 from Cheek, nine from senior Joe Lang and eight from sophomore Kyle Anderson – also set a Harvard record. Cheek jumped to fifth on the Crimson’s all-time points list with 177.
Four days later, Harvard again trailed at halftime against Dartmouth before Cheek scored the go-ahead goal at the 11:52 mark in the third quarter.
When the Big Green tied it 8-8 to start the fourth period, Cheek assisted Kyle Salvatore and Kyle Anderson for the go-ahead and insurance tallies in the final six minutes for the win.
Cheek’s team-high five points against Dartmouth extended his point streak to 39 games, with 175 points in the span.
