Loyola Academy (Ill.) lost significant scorers, but dips into its deep talent pool to remain at No. 1 in the Midwest Girls preseason rankings. New Trier (Ill.) has strength top to bottom at No. 2. East Grand Rapids leads all Michigan squads as it goes for its eighth Division 2 state title in 10 years. No. 4 Hinsdale Central (Ill.) and No. 5 Dublin Coffman (Ohio) return key pieces to compete with anyone.  New coach Morgan Fee Maldovan is set to keep the No. 6 Upper Arlington (Ohio) program going strong, and No. 7 New Albany returns an experienced starting core to shoot for the Ohio state title. No. 8 Rockford (Mich.) is reloading after its state crown, while Prior Lake (Minn.) and Edina (Minn.) are the best of the North Star state.

1. LOYOLA ACADEMY (ILL.)

The Ramblers graduated top scorers Ellie Lazzaretto and Maley Starr, who combined to score 178 goals last season, but return plenty of talent. That includes a trio of All-Americans in Maeve Dooley (Marquette), Maeve Dwyer (Notre Dame) and Adrienne Leone (Davidson).

2. NEW TRIER (ILL.)

The Trevians have talent up top in the Curry twins, Emma (50 goals) and Grace (48), both of whom have committed to George Washington. New Trier also has a loaded midfield led by juniors Audrey Rudolph (Ohio State), who had a team-leading 24 caused turnovers last year, and Kennedy Meier (Michigan), who tallied 31 goals and 80 draw controls. Expect Lily Wallace (Coastal Carolina) to lead the defense.

3. EAST GRAND RAPIDS (MICH.)

Lucy Cavanaugh, Eliana LaMange and Lizzie Lundeen put on a performance to remember in last year’s state title game, combining for 14 goals and eight assists. The good news for the Pioneers? All three are back.

4. HINSDALE CENTRAL (ILL.)

Replacing Charlotte Callahan (Yale) will not be easy, but the Red Devils return top-notch talent in Annette Ciupek (Berkeley) and Angie Conley (Notre Dame). Reese Napier (Arizona State) and Conley have some of the area’s top stick skills while senior Riley Matthews was second on the team in assists last season behind only Conley.

5. DUBLIN COFFMAN (OHIO)

The Rocks went on a remarkable run last year, defeating Dublin Jerome, Loveland, New Albany and Upper Arlington by a combined seven goals en route to a state championship. Dublin Coffman returns two of the leading architects of that magic in juniors Bailey Morris and Kate Tyack, with the latter tallying five goals in the state title game.

6. UPPER ARLINGTON (OHIO)

It’s a new era, as Wendy Pinta stepped down after notching 382 victories and nine state titles at the helm of the Golden Bears. One of her former players, Morgan Fee Maldovan, is picking up the reins and inherits plenty of talent, including All-American Camryn Callaghan (62 goals), Rian Adkins (41 goals, 22 assists) and Kampbell Stone (47 goals, 101 draw controls).

7. NEW ALBANY (OHIO)

Last season’s Buckeye State runner-up with 20 wins, the Eagles are poised to make another deep run with the return of 11 starters. That includes leading scorer and all-around talent Mary Carson (62 goals, 77 ground balls, 92 draw controls), more top offensive prowess like Katie Kaucheck (53 goals, 32 assists) and Abby Cole (58 goals, 20 assists) and aggressive defenders Catherine Gurd and Maddy Paz.

8. ROCKFORD (MICH.)

The Rams have a lot of goals to replace, as All-American Katherine Rodriguez and Chloe Dunham combined for 121 last season prior to graduation. Expect seniors Chloe Holmes (39 goals, 26 assists) and Mackenzie Delacher (38 goals, 25 assists) to head the offense while Karsyn Broderick provides strong leadership on the defensive end.

9. PRIOR LAKE (MINN.)

The Lakers graduated a mighty Class of 2021 headlined by All-Americans Payton Bloedow (78 goals, 81 draw controls, 68 ground balls) and Meghan McGowen (54 ground balls), but return plenty of talent as they look to defend their state title. Prior Lake’s attack will be led by 6-0 lefty Nina Winter (33 goals, 28 assists) and Rachel Ward, who was limited last year by an ankle injury, while Kendra Knutson has a proven ability to shut down top attackers.

10. EDINA (MINN.)

All-American Haley Reeck, who scored 77 goals last season, will not be easy to replace, but Columbia University commit Cordelia Flemming (43 goals, 59 draw controls), Nicola Santoni (24 goals, 33 draw controls) and Emerson Gorney (18 goals, 19 assists) should keep the Hornets plenty dangerous on the attack. Edina also has the pieces to be deadly on defense, including senior shutdown defenders Jane Kuehl and Haley Maxwell as well as speedy junior Mary Velner (17 forced turnovers).
