Kayla Treanor, one of the craftiest attackers in the history of lacrosse, is retiring from the U.S. national team program.

Treanor captured gold medals with the U.S. team in both 2017 and 2022. After defeating Canada earlier this month to win gold, when asked if this would be her last international game, she told USA Lacrosse Magazine editor in chief Matt DaSilva, “I think so.”

She’s since confirmed the retirement, telling Alyssa Murray Cometti of Inside Lacrosse that her commitment to leading Syracuse women’s lacrosse has helped her come to a decision.

“With being able to coach at Syracuse, it’s beyond a dream come true. I never thought it’d be possible,” Treanor told Inside Lacrosse. ”It’s like the most special place in the world to me, and to be able to coach there and coach this team, to have my family here, all these things. I’m just so looking forward to the future with Syracuse. That’s why I know I’m ready to be done. I think I owe Syracuse my very best, and I owe it my all. So I want to make sure that I do that for them.”

Treanor amassed 43 points on 24 goals and 19 assists — all team highs — in the 2017 tournament, which included a record-setting 12-point performance against England in pool play. She had 20 goals and 14 assists in the 2022 tournament, leading the U.S. with 34 points.

Treanor was a four-time All-American at Syracuse (2013-16) and led the Orange to Championship Weekend in each of her seasons in the Dome. She was a three-time Tewaaraton Award finalist and was the IWLCA Attacker of the Year three times (2014-16).
