For the National Lacrosse League’s two newest franchises, phase one is complete.

The NLL held an expansion draft Tuesday, during which the New York Riptide and (new) Rochester Knighthawks had the opportunity to select players left unprotected by the NLL’s existing 11 teams.

The Knighthawks, the previous iteration of which now resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia as the Thunderbirds, made the biggest splash by drafting former NLL MVP Shawn Evans first overall. Evans was one of two unprotected Bandits who came off the board in the first round, with the Riptide snagging Jordan Durston.

The Riptide — whose head coach and general manager, Regy Thorpe, coaches the U.S. indoor team that will compete in the world championship in September — then made a run on American players. Thorpe tabbed John Ranagan (Georgia Swarm) and Connor Kelly (San Diego Seals) with New York’s second- and third-round picks, then took Kieran McArdle (Toronto Rock) and Mike Manley (Halifax Thunderbirds) in the seventh and eighth rounds.
