Matt Chlastawa, the all-time leading scorer at Bates and a three-time USILA Division III All-American, entered the NCAA transfer portal Thursday.

Chlastawa, a senior attackman from Westfield, Mass., set the Bobcats’ career scoring record as a junior and entered this season with 274 career points. He had two goals and eight assists in three games before the NESCAC and then the NCAA canceled spring sports due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S.

He’s the latest Division III standout to test the transfer portal who could garner Division I interest. The NESCAC alone accounts for eight players who were All-Americans last year now seeking opportunities elsewhere thanks to the NCAA’s blanket waiver of eligibility to spring sports athletes.

Among them are US Lacrosse Magazine’s Division III Preseason Player of the Year in Brendan Hoffman (Williams), one of the top short-stick defensive midfielders in the country in Jimmy McAfee (Amherst) and a trio of players (Jack Donohue, Nick Shanks and Matt Treiber) from perennial powerhouse Tufts. Wesleyan goalie Otto Bohan and Amherst attackman Colin Minicus also are in the portal.

Other Division III All-Americans in the transfer portal include Gettysburg defenseman Mitch Wykoff, Denison attackman Peter Pittroff, Franklin & Marshall attackman Kevin Mollihan, Gettysburg midfielder Michael McCormick and Washington and Lee midfielder Hudson Hamill.

Entering the transfer portal does not guarantee that the student-athlete will attend a new school next season. Players can withdraw from the portal just as easily as they can add their names and instead decide to return to their current schools or graduate.
