Surprising news out of the Patriot League on Tuesday, as Colgate announced that men’s lacrosse coach Mike Murphy was resigning after seven years with the program. The news comes after Murphy led the Raiders to a 7-8 season, including an upset victory over Cornell on Feb. 17.
In his seven seasons at Colgate, Murphy put together a record of 57-51, including a 26-26 mark in Patriot League play. The highlights included five Patriot League tournaments and titles in 2012 and 2015.
He led a Colgate team that included Peter Baum in 2012 — a season, Murphy’s first with the Raiders, that ended in a Tewaaraton Award for Baum.
"We thank Mike for his hard work and service to our university and department," said Colgate Vice President and Director of Athletics Nicki Moore. "We wish him the very best moving forward.”
Although his tenure at Colgate was largely successful, Murphy’s team struggled after winning the Patriot League in 2015. The Raiders went 16-27 from 2016-2018, finishing with a losing record in the Patriot League in each season.
The resignation leaves Colgate looking for a new head coach — one of a few programs currently searching. Bellarmine, which fired coach Kevin Burns, and Siena, which parted ways with John Svec, join the Raiders in the coaching carousel.
