Stick to Stick: A Lacrosse Poem by Hayes Holzman

“Showcase” brings your lacrosse-themed writing and artwork to life in the pages of this magazine. This month, 10-year-old “lax maniac” Hayes Holzman of Boca Raton, Fla., pens a poem about his favorite sport.

The air was thick, the grass was slick.
The faceoff intense, my hand strong on the stick.
The ref blew the whistle, the ball in the center.
At the end of the game, who will be the winner?

Don’t get caught in the crease, the whistle will blow.
That’s a penalty, uh-oh!
Running up and down, side to side.
Parents on the sideline, beaming with pride.

Focus and speed, it takes a lot.
All kinds of weather, cold or hot.
Stick skills are required, that I know.
Some have mullets, most have flow.

Cradle, cradle, coast to coast.
Defense, offense, giving my most.
So what is all this, do you ask?
Lacrosse is the game, my number one task.
