St. Paul’s School (Md.) and Baldwinsville (N.Y.) are the only new teams to join the rankings but it was an active week of shifting among the most recent Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25.

St. John’s (Md.) and Brunswick (Conn.) held the top two spots again, but beyond the two unbeatens is an ever-changing landscape that could see more develop this week. There are only three other teams with perfect records in the Top 25 after St. Mary’s (Md.) lost twice last week, and there will be at most four unbeatens left after new No. 3 Mt. Sinai (N.Y.) and No. 9 Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.) meet this week. With playoffs here or around the corner in most regions, it is a fun time to follow.

For many teams in the Northeast, Mothers’ Day weekend represented their last big non-league games of the 2022 season before closing out the regular season in conference play and preparing for the postseason. Brunswick showed why they deserved to be atop the Northeast, racing out to a big early lead before holding on late to defeat a Darien (Conn.) team that then rallied late to stun St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) at home to stir up the rankings. Chaminade (N.Y.) jumps back into the region’s top 10 on the strength of its recent improvement.

While the IAC and WCAC playoffs highlight the Mid-Atlantic action, there is that same atmosphere among the MIAA A Conference teams that are fighting to secure their playoff seeds in the final regular season week. Calvert Hall’s struggles seem a thing of the past as they streak toward a possible No. 2 seeding, and last year’s conference champion Boys’ Latin (Md.) became the first team to knock off St. Mary’s this spring with Archbishop Spalding (Md.) then duplicating the feat later in the week to serve notice as a contender. Bullis (Md.) stayed hot with a key win over Georgetown Prep (Md.) while Malvern (Pa.) dropped after a surprise upset that only affirmed how competitive the region is.

The South region saw thrills with playoff games all week. Dallas Jesuit (Texas) rallied for a state title to hold onto the top spot, and St. Andrew’s (Fla.) repeated as state champions in the Sunshine State. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) rode its state title run to a big jump in the rankings. While Texas and Florida wrapped up state play, Holly Springs (N.C.) and Lovett (Ga.) are looking to retain their top spots in their states.

Culver remains the class of the Midwest. A pair of big wins helped the Eagles climb in the national rankings. Tight wins by St. Ignatius (Ohio) and Upper Arlington (Ohio) allowed them to remain among the region’s top three. St. Xavier (Ky.) tries to build on its successful regular season in the Kentucky playoffs.

The same four teams lead the West Region with Mater Dei (Calif.) pacing the California squads that have opened playoff action. The Monarchs were set to play No. 3 Corona del Mar (Calif.) in the section semifinals with championship and ranking implications. It’s similar for No. 5 St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) meeting Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.) in the finals. Colorado giant Regis Jesuit is geared up for its state playoffs after a surprise upset, and Brophy Prep (Ariz.) joins the region rankings after securing its state title.

Tomas Delgado had two goals and two assists, Hudson Hausmann and Jackson Wolfram scored two goals apiece and Henry Caponiti and Hunter Spiess each added one goal and one assist apiece as Brunswick School led 7-0 after one quarter, 8-1 in the second quarter and 11-4 after three quarters in a 12-10 victory over Darien on May 5. 2. Mt. Sinai (N.Y.), 14-0

After having to come from behind to beat Garden City (N.Y.) at the GEICO HS Lacrosse Showcase, Mt. Sinai has steamrolled the competition in league play, winning at Westhampton (N.Y.) and Smithtown West (N.Y.) before beating East Islip (N.Y.) 13-2 at home. Lucas Laforge had six goals and one assist, Joey Spallina added two goals and seven assists and James Carretta added two goals and one assist for the Mustangs, who host Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.) May 12 in what could be the game of the year in Suffolk County. Previous: 3

3. Darien (Conn.), 11-2

The Blue Wave rode a bevy of man-up goals to put a scare in Brunswick School (Conn.). Two days later at home, Darien’s late comeback against St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) was the stuff of legends. Darien scored five goals in the final 2:18, capped by Christian Allegro’s winner, his third, with 1.5 seconds remaining in a 19-18 victory. Matthew Minicus had six goals and three assists and Joe Cesare had five goals and one assist in the signature win. Previous: 4

4. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 10-2

Owen Duffy had four goals and four assists, Patrick Carragher had three goals and an assist, Jack Speidell had three goals and Michael Leo had four goals and one assist, his final goal giving the Friars an 18-14 lead with 4:36 remaining at Darien (Conn.). A solid road win, though, turned into a tough to swallow defeat with the Blue Wave scoring five goals in the final 2:18 to stun St. Anthony’s, which defeated rival Chaminade (N.Y.) by one at home during the week. 5. Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.), 14-0

The Wildcats had some late drama of their own May 7 on the road, with Liam Gregorek, who had three goals and three assists, scoring the tying goal with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter and Ryan Herr netting the overtime winner in a 10-9 victory at Bronxville (N.Y.). Liam Kershis had three goals and four assists and Alec Gregorek had three goals and one assists for undefeated Shoreham-Wading River, the last team to beat Mt. Sinai (N.Y.). Previous: 5

6. Victor (N.Y.), 13-0

We know what they say about defense and championships and we expect the Blue Devils do as well. Victor’s suffocating defense shined again this week in wins over Canandaigua (N.Y.) 7-2 and Penfield (N.Y.) 14-4. Dan Stone’s squad is averaging just 4.7 goals against per game. Pax Marshall had six goals and one assist, Thomas Gravino had three goals and five assists and Sam Gotham netted a hat trick vs. Penfield. Previous: 6

7. Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.), 11-1

If anyone doubted the Seahawks after a win at Garden City (N.Y.) earlier this year, they silenced the remaining naysayers with an 8-7 victory at Manhasset (N.Y.) on May 4. Jake Rogers, who was the hero against the Trojans, scored a hat trick, Luke Giarraputo had two goals and two assists and Spencer Will went beast mode in the cage, showing why the senior they call “Swill” is considered Nassau County’s top goaltender. 8. Garden City (N.Y.), 10-2

It’s now four straight wins after back-to-back defeats — by five combined goals — for the Trojans, who defeated MacArthur (N.Y.) 12-6 following a 13-goal win over Carey (N.Y.). Luke Schmitt struck for three goals, Mike Fargione and Jack Archer had two goals and two assists apiece, Jay Ottomanelli added a pair of goals and Ryan McKenna had three assists in the win over MacArthur. 9. Massapequa (N.Y.), 10-1

The Chiefs are also streaking, having won nine in a row following an overtime defeat to South Side (N.Y.) back on April 1. While there’s no alpha, Massapequa wins on a team mentality, a willingness to share the ball and feed the hot hand. If they can avoid a letdown against a dangerous Syosset (N.Y.) squad May 13, they should be the top seed in the Nassau Conference A playoffs. Previous: 10

10. Chaminade (N.Y.), 9-4

Yes, the Flyers move up following a loss, but a 13-12 defeat to rival St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) was a spirited, much-improved performance for a team that appears to be rounding into form at the perfect time. The first Reg’s Rock since 2019 between Chaminade and Manhasset (N.Y.) was scheduled for May 7, but pushed back to May 12 because of inclement weather. Previous: NR

MID-ATLANTIC TOP 10

1. St. John’s College High (D.C.), 18-0

The Cadets upheld their top seed through their first two games of the WCAC playoffs to reach the final that was scheduled for May 9 against Gonzaga (D.C.). St. John’s defeated Bishop O’Connell (Va.) 20-4 in the quarterfinals, then rolled by fourth-seeded Paul VI (Va.) 22-2 in the semifinals. St. John’s is the defending champion. Previous: 1

2. Calvert Hall (Md.), 12-4

The Cardinals won their fifth straight game, 16-5, over Severn (Md.) on May 6. They picked up an important 13-8 win over Archbishop Spalding (Md.) earlier in the week. Calvert Hall’s dominant defense helped stake them to a 7-0 halftime lead, and they pulled away again once Spalding got as close as 9-6. Shuey Kelly scored four times and provided a helper. Jordan Wray had a hat trick and Luke McAuliffe paced the defensive efforts. Previous: 4

3. Boys’ Latin (Md.), 12-3

The Lakers used a decisive 4-1 second-quarter edge to go up and hold down St. Mary’s (Md.) for a key 7-4 win. Hopper Zappitello scored twice and Dom Pietramala had a goal and two assists to pace the offense. Cardin Stoller stopped 12 shots for a stingy defense. Boys’ Latin handed Mount St. Joseph (Md.) a 15-7 defeat to finish the week and plays at St. Paul’s (Md.) on May 10 to finish the regular season. Previous: 5

4. St. Mary’s (Md.) 15-2

The Saints dropped its first pair of games of the season to talented teams Boys’ Latin (Md.) on May 3 and Archbishop Spalding (Md.) on May 5. The St. Mary’s offense was limited in both losses. The Saints fell 7-4 to Boys’ Latin and never had more than a single goal in any quarter. Will Hopkins had a goal and two assists in the loss. Spalding defeated St. Mary’s 8-6 despite two goals apiece from Jake Adams and Nick Golini. St. Mary’s finishes the regular season against Severn (Md.) on May 10. Previous: 2

5. Archbishop Spalding (Md.), 11-4

The Cavaliers bounced back from a 13-8 loss to streaking Calvert Hall (Md.) to knock off first-place St. Mary’s (Md.) 8-6. Spalding received strong play from goalie Connor McMahon and balanced offense to pick up a big win. Ryann Schrier scored twice as the Cavaliers kept their chances of a No. 2 seed alive heading into their May 10 game against Mount St. Joseph (Md.). Previous: 7

6. Bullis (Md.) 12-4

The Bulldogs continued its strong second half of the season with a 13-8 win over Georgetown Prep (Md.) in their regular-season finale on May 3. Tucker Wade led the way with five goals – including one behind the back – and three assists. Jackson Maher, Chase Band and Ben Jose all scored two goals apiece, and Maher also had an assist. The win helped them earn the No. 1 seed for the IAC playoffs, and after a bye they are scheduled to play fifth-seeded Episcopal (Va.) on May 10 as they go for a ninth straight win. Previous: 9

7. Georgetown Prep (Md.), 13-5

The Hoyas won their IAC quarterfinal game over St. Albans (D.C.) 19-10 to advance to the semifinals scheduled for May 10 against second-seeded Landon (Md.). Georgetown dropped to the No. 3 seed after losing to Bullis (Md.) 13-8 in their regular-season finale. Previous: 3

8. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 15-3

The Friars won a key regional match over Salesianum (Del.) 10-7 on May 7. The day before, they topped Germantown Academy (Pa.) 11-4 with Jack Irish notching a hat trick and Mike Ortlieb scoring twice and assisting on two other goals. The Friars were upset by Episcopal (Pa.) 6-5 to start the week. Episcopal scored three goals in the fourth quarter to overtake Malvern. Ortlieb had a hat trick and Joe Doherty made 15 saves. 9. McDonogh (Md.), 9-6

The Eagles rolled by John Carroll (Md.) 17-4 in their lone game this week. McDonogh is 5-4 in the MIAA A Conference, in a three-way tie with Severn (Md.) and St. Paul’s (Md.) for the final two playoff spots. McDonogh will look for a win over Gilman (Md.) this week to clinch a berth. Previous: 8

1. Dallas Jesuit (Texas), 14-2

The Rangers rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat Episcopal School of Dallas (Texas) 11-10 in the state title game May 8. Dallas Jesuit defended its 2021 title and earned the fourth crown in program history. The day before, Jesuit earned a title game berth after defeating St. Mark’s (Texas) 12-6. Previous: 1

2. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 20-3

The Scots earned their second-straight state championship, holding off Benjamin (Fla.) 9-7 on May 7. St. Andrew’s previously beat Jesuit (Fla.) 11-3 to earn a spot in the title game. Jack Schulte and Kurt Schwarz had hat tricks in the win over Jesuit while Connor Hofbauer’s three-goal performance led the way in the title game. Previous: 2

3. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.), 16-3

The Raiders avenged their 2019 championship game loss to Ponte Vedra (Fla.) by defeating the Sharks 13-12 to win a state title. St. Thomas Aquinas rallied from down a goal in the final 90 seconds for the comeback victory. STA advanced to the championship round via a 12-10 win over Plant (Fla.) in the semifinals. Previous: 6

4. Episcopal School of Dallas (Texas), 20-4

The Eagles came just minutes shy of winning a state championship. Episcopal School of Dallas relinquished a three-goal lead late in the state championship May 8 against Dallas Jesuit and lost to the Rangers 11-10. ESD advanced to the championship round thanks to a 13-12 overtime win over Westlake (Texas). Previous: 4

5. Holly Springs (N.C.), 16-2

The Golden Hawks opened playoff action with a 16-4 win over Fuquay-Varina (N.C.). Senior Wade Watson led the way for Holly Springs with four goals and an assist. Holly Springs dominated the X by winning 21 of 22 faceoffs. Previous: 5

6. Westlake (Texas), 13-4

The Chapperals closed out their season with a heartbreaking 13-12 overtime loss to Episcopal School of Dallas (Texas) in the semifinals. Westlake finished the season 13-2 against in-state competition, with both losses coming against ESD. Previous: 3

7. Benjamin (Fla.), 18-4

The Buccaneers’ 2022 season ended the way it started: with a loss to St. Andrew’s (Fla.). Benjamin tried to rally from five goals down in the fourth quarter, but their rally came up short in a 9-7 loss in the state championship. Benjamin advanced to the championship thanks to a 13-5 win over Bolles (Fla.). Jack Regnery notched a hat trick in the championship and a two-goal effort in the semifinals. Previous: 7

8. Lovett (Ga.), 21-0

The Lions continued their unbeaten season with playoff victories over Richmond Hill (Ga.) and Marist (Ga.). Lovett defeated Richmond Hill 21-3 and Marist 17-6. Previous: 8

After defeating Newsome (Fla.) 19-11 in the state quarterfinals, the Panthers’ season ended with a 12-10 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.). Plant’s season ended in the state semifinals in back-to-back seasons. Plant has yet to win a state title. Previous: 9

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 12-2

The Eagles won the Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association (MSLA) championship with victories over Hudson (Ohio) and Western Reserve Academy (Ohio). Teamwork was key in net, where junior Colin Vickrey and sophomore Tade Wynn combined for 17 saves against WRA, and at the X, where sophomore Spencer Reagan and freshman Tay Rodriguez combined to go 16-of-24. Previous: 1

2. St. Ignatius (Ohio), 11-6

The Wildcats picked up a thrilling MSLA victory over St. Xavier (Ohio) thanks to a Braden Lair game-winning goal in overtime. Luc Yacovone helped St. Ignatius get to overtime in the first place with a three-goal, three-assist performance. Previous: 2

3. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 13-1

 The Golden Bears also managed to impress over the weekend, edging Brother Rice (Mich.) at home 10-9. Upper Arlington has another tough out-of-state foe coming up in Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.). Previous: 3

4. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 12-3

The Ramblers' defense was sterling this past week, allowing just 13 goals over three victories. That included a tough 8-5 victory over Wheaton Academy (Ill.) and a 13-6 win over a dangerous York (Ill.) team. Previous: 5

5. MICDS (Mo.), 14-1

The Rams' offense roared with 55 goals over three victories against in-state foes John Burroughs, Ladue and Christian Brothers. That included Bjorn Sjogren exploding for eight goals and two assists against Christian Brothers along with five more goals against Ladue, while Brin Lewis tallied four-plus goals in all three games. Previous: 6

6. Forest Hills Central (Mich.), 13-0

Speaking of explosive offense, Jonah McConnell and John Tomsheck were unstoppable once again as the Rangers topped in-state foes East Grand Rapids, Forest Hills Eastern and Okemos. The duo was particularly deadly in the Okemos contest, with McConnell scoring nine goals and Tomsheck adding six goals and four assists. Previous: 7

7. Hudson (Ohio), 10-5

For the most part, the Explorers have been able to score against everyone on their grueling schedule, with at least nine goals in every game. That changed in the MSLA semifinals when Culver Academy (Ind.) held Hudson to just two goals. Previous: 8

8. Brother Rice (Mich.) 10-5

Like the Explorers, the Warriors have played a loaded schedule, including another grueling weekend in which Brother Rice edged Dublin Jerome (Ohio) before falling to Upper Arlington (Ohio) by a single goal. Coming off their trip south to the Buckeye State, the Warriors have no time to rest with a shorter but no less challenging trip to Forest Hills Central (Mich.). Previous: 10

9. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 13-2

The Celtics have no time to mourn a heartbreaker against Brother Rice (Mich.) in which the two teams were tied at 11 before the Warriors ended the game on a 4-1 run. Dublin Jerome has another big test May 11 against a tough St. Xavier (Ohio) squad that nearly upset St. Ignatius at the MSLA Tournament. Previous: 4

10. St. Xavier (Ky.), 16-3

The Tigers' postseason journey begins May 10 against the same Atherton team they just dispatched 29-0 to conclude the regular season. A potential district title game would take place May 12 to be followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and the state title game. Previous: 9

1. Mater Dei (Calif.), 17-3

The Monarchs are back in the CIF Southern Section semifinals for a second straight year after beating Yorba Linda (Calif.) 11-5 in the playoff opener May 4 and Trabuco Hills (Calif.) 13-4 in the quarterfinals May 6. Reece Lapham led the attack against Yorba Linda with three goals, and the defense limited the opponent to nine shots. Mater Dei was set to meet No. 3 Corona del Mar (Calif.) in the semifinals May 9. 2. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 19-1

The Tartans also advanced to the CIF Southern Section semifinals to set up a meeting with Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) for the first time this season. St. Margaret’s opened the playoffs with an 18-7 win over Sierra Canyon (Calif.) and beat Los Alamitos (Calif.) 16-11 in the quarterfinals. John Culley and William Stahl each tallied five goals against Sierra Canyon, and Austin Hicks had three goals. Previous: 2

3. Corona del Mar (Calif.), 17-3

The Sea Kings were set to try to avenge a regular-season loss against Mater Dei on May 9 in the CIF Southern Section semifinals, but they passed another big test in the quarterfinals when they beat Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.) for a second time. This one, a 15-10 victory, was not as nerve-wracking as their regular-season matchup, which was decided by one goal. Nic Peloso led with six goals, Ty Caffarelli added five goals and Lucas Newton chipped in two goals and four assists. Previous: 3

4. Corner Canyon (Utah), 15-1

Jacob Osborn (five goals and one assist) and Mason Quick (five goals) led the Chargers to an 18-8 win over American Fork (Utah) in the regular-season finale May 6. Blake Franckowiak added one goal and four assists, and Blaze DeGracie added four goals, while Jon King rounded out the scoring with a hat trick. 5. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 17-4

The Wildcats rolled through the first two rounds of the WCAL playoffs to set up a final rematch with Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.). They repeated their 2021 championship with a 16-12 victory, making them 2-0 against the Gators this season. CIF-Central Coast Section playoffs begin May 11. Previous: 6

6. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 12-1

The Raiders suffered a surprising loss to Arapahoe (Colo.) last week, falling 6-4 for their only in-state loss this season. They bounced back to beat Cherry Creek (Colo.), 10-6, in the regular-season finale and still earned the top seed in the Class 5A state playoffs, where they await the winner between Lakewood (Colo.) and Denver East (Colo.) in the second round May 14. 7. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 18-4

The Knights won their first two CIF Southern Section playoff games by a combined score of 28-10. Jackson Hines tallied six goals and one assist in a 13-5 win over Agoura (Calif.) on May 6 in the quarterfinals, and freshman Isaiah Chavez won 16 of 21 faceoff attempts. Previous: 8

8. Brophy Prep (Ariz.), 21-2

The Broncos claimed the Arizona state title with an 11-8 win over Desert Vista (Ariz.) on May 6, as they went unbeaten against in-state competition. Their lone losses were against Mater Dei (Calif.) by one and Palo Verde (Nevada) in overtime. Previous: NR

9. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 19-2

The Gators trailed St. Ignatius (Calif.) by just one at halftime of their WCAL championship game but couldn’t prevent the Wildcats from pulling away for the win. Kai Lockton finished with three goals and one assist in the loss, while Eric Bollar also had a hat trick and Henry Rydberg made eight saves in goal. SHP will be hoping for another chance in the CIF-Central Coast playoffs, where the Gators finally beat the Wildcats last year for the section title. Previous: 9
