Everything You Need to Know About the 2023 USA Lacrosse Fall Classic

One of Fall Ball’s premier lacrosse events is back this weekend at USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. The USA Lacrosse Fall Classic, pitting U.S. national teams against foes from Canada and the NCAA, is always a precursor to what’s to come in both the upcoming college and international seasons.

This weekend, the U.S. U20 women’s training team will be on display as it readies for next summer’s World Lacrosse U20 Women’s World Championship in Hong Kong, China.

Also featured prominently at Fall Classic will be the USA Select boys’ and girls’ teams. The U16 and U18 squads, chosen from some of the best players in the country after a rigorous tryout process, will compete for the Brogden Cup.

EXTRA ENERGY

There should be an extra energy in the air throughout the weekend on the heels of the LA28 Organizing Committee’s decision to recommend lacrosse as one of five sports to be added to the program for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Final approval of the additional sports to the Olympic program for 2028 will be voted on during the International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai, India, from October 15-17.

NORTHWESTERN’S REIGN BEGINS

A little over four months after Northwestern dominated Boston College to capture the Division I women’s national championship, the Wildcats return to the field with a roster that’s built to chase a repeat. Izzy Scane, the 2023 Tewaaraton winner, is back, as are Erin Coykendall and Molly Laliberty.

Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller — who also coaches the U.S. U20 women — dipped into the transfer portal to bring in Mary Schumar (Marquette) and Lindsey Frank (Richmond), too. You can count on one hand (and maybe even on two or three fingers) rosters that can rival Northwestern’s.

GOLD MEDAL REMATCH

Six members of the 2023 U.S. Men’s National Training Team and Cole Kirst, co-captain of the 2022 U.S. Men’s U21 National Team that won gold in Ireland, headline the U.S. roster that will go toe-to-toe with Canada in a gold-medal rematch of this summer’s World Lacrosse Men’s Championship.

The Friday night contest between the U.S. and Canada is one of the most highly anticipated of the weekend.

PROVING GROUND

As the U.S. U20 training team prepares for the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship, it’ll be hard-pressed to find competition like it will go up against this weekend. Sure, inters quads scrimmage help, but there’s nothing quite like playing against 2023 champion Northwestern and international rival Canada.

NITTANY AT NIGHT

This weekend will have a distinct Penn State flavor to it. That’s largely due to the presence of the Penn State men’s team, which made a run to Championship Weekend in May. But also because a key player on the U.S. men’s roster — Mac O’Keefe — is a Penn State alum fresh off a Premier Lacrosse League championship with the Archers. Penn State will play at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
