Virginia Tech's first trip to the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship will last at least a couple of more days after the Hokies downed Georgetown 13-10 on Friday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C. Virginia Tech advances to Sunday's second round where it will match up with Atlantic Coast Conference rival and No. 2 seed North Carolina.

After falling behind 2-0 early, Virginia Tech quickly found its footing with five straight goals, three of them by freshman Paige Petty.

The Hokies stretched the lead to as big as 10-3 early in the second half, but Georgetown scored four straight to get within striking distance at 11-8, but Petty then scored her fourth goal of the game with 9:14 left and Marissa Davey quickly followed with another to seal the game.

Petty and senior Tristan McGinley each scored four goals for Virginia Tech and Meagh Graham made 10 saves as the Hokies improved to 14-6.

Taylor Gebhardt had three goals and two assists for Georgetown (12-7).

Virginia Tech now gets a third crack at North Carolina. North Carolina scored two goals in the final two minutes to beat the Hokies 13-12 on March 28 and then won 14-8 in the semifinal round of the ACC tournament on April 27.

Belodeau Powers Penn Past Penn State

Penn's star freshman Zoe Belodeau came up big in her first NCAA tournament game, scoring the game-winning goal with one second left in overtime to lead the Quakers past Penn State 15-14. Penn advances to play unbeaten Stony Brook on Sunday.

After falling behind early, Penn went on a 7-1 run in the first half to open up a four-goal lead, but Penn State chipped away, finally tying the game 12-12 on Madison Carter's fifth goal with 9:36 left in the game.

After the teams traded goals, Belodeau scored on a behind-the-back shot with 4:23 remaining to give the Quakers a 14-13 lead. Penn State had an answer, however, as Katie O'Donnell scored her fifth goal of the game on a free position shot with 22 seconds left in regulation.

The Nittany Lions had chances to win it in overtime, but Penn goalie Mikaila Cheeseman made two of her 13 saves in extra time, the last with 46 seconds remaining to give the Quakers its final possession, which Belodeau cashed in for the winner off a feed from Caroline Cummings.

Penn won the game despite Penn State having a 14-2 advantage in free position shots. Belodeau had five goals and an assist to lead the Penn offense and she added a game-high eight draw controls. Cummings (2g, 3a), Erin Barry (3g, 1a) and Gabby Rosenzweig (4a) aided the Penn offense.

Lasota's Record-Setting Night Leads Northwestern

Playing in her first NCAA tournament game in two years, Selena Lasota made up for lost time, scoring a NCAA tournament record, Northwestern record-tying and career-best nine goals in the Wildcats 24-18 win over Richmond at Towson University. The 42 combined goals set a NCAA tournament single game record, breaking the mark of 41 set earlier in the night in Colorado's 23-18 win over Jacksonville.

Lasota, who missed most of last season with an injury, scored three times in the opening five minutes of the game, six goals in the first half, and her three goals in the second half came during a 5-1 Northwestern run after Richmond had cut the Wildcats leads to three goals.

Lasota also added a pair of assists, giving her 11 points on the night. Lost in Lasota's special night was a six-goal performance from Sheila Nesselbush. The duo combined for 10 of the Wildcats' 15 first-half goals.

Katie Sciandra scored seven times for Richmond and Marissa Brown added four.

Kiernan's Monster Night Leads Colorado

Colorado senior Darby Kiernan broke her own school record for points in a game (12), leading the Buffaloes to a 23-18 victory over Jacksonville for the first NCAA tournament win in the five-year history of the program.

Kiernan had seven goals and five assists and grabbed a game-high 11 draw controls for Colorado.

"I thought Darby did a great job of stepping up in certain areas and being aggressive and taking advantage of her opportunities," said Colorado head coach Ann Elliott. "As a whole, I thought offensively we did a great job of working together and finishing those opportunities."

Colorado never trailed in the game and led by as many as nine goals in the first half, but Jacksonville scored five straight goals late in the first half and got as close as three goals in the second half, but Colorado went on a five-goal run of its own to the game away.

Miranda Stinson and Jen Mistretta each scored four times for Colorado. Ashtyn Hiron led Jacksonville's offense with three goals and four assists.

Other First Round Games

• Colby Chanenchuk's goal in double overtime gave Princeton a 12-11 victory over Syracuse. Read more from Jonathan Sigal here.

• Towson's Emily Gillingham tied a NCAA tournament record, scoring just nine seconds into the game, and the Tigers never slowed up, beating Wagner 16-6. Kaitlyn Montalbano led Towson with four goals and Gillingham had a hat trick.

• Elizabeth Behrins and Quintin Hoch-Bullen each scored four goals as Denver beat High Point 23-12. Carson Gregg made 12 saves to send the Pioneers to a second round matchup at No. 1 seed Maryland on Sunday. The Terps are coached by Cathy Reese, who was the head coach at Denver from 2004-06.

• Virginia came into the NCAA tournament having lost seven of its last eight games, but you wouldn't have known it as the Cavaliers downed Pac-12 champion Stanford 12-3. Rachel Vander Kolk made 14 saves, blanking Stanford in the opening half, and Sammy Mueller scored five goals.

• Ingrid Boyum made a career-high 17 saves as Navy downed Johns Hopkins 16-9. Navy scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed. Julia Collins led the Midshipmen with six goals. Navy, which won the Patriot League championship at Loyola last weekend. will play the Greyhounds again on their home turf on Sunday.

• Freshman Livy Rosenzweig had four goals and two assists, giving her 93 points for the season, as Loyola blitzed Fairfield 18-2. Kady Glynn made 16 saves in the victory.

Division II First Round

Defending national champion Adelphi overcame a three-goal first half deficit and beat LIU-Post 13-10 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Panthers will meet LeMoyne tomorrow in the quarterfinals in the rubber match between the two New York powers. Adelphi won the first meeting 11-8, but fell to the Dolphins 14-10 in the Northeast-10 championship game.

On Friday, Adelphi used a four-goal run in the second half to break a 9-9 tie with Lena Riportella scoring three of those goals. Beth Ann Pierece led the Panthers with four goals. 

Also winning first round games on Friday were East Stroudsburg, Florida Tech and Regis.

East Stroudsburg rallied from a five goals down in the first half and three goals in the second half, beating Mercyhurst 12-11. Emma Rufalo scored the game-winning goal with 32 seconds remaining and then won the ensuing draw. Rufalo scored three goals for the Warriors, who won their first-ever NCAA tournament game.

Florida Tech trailed by three early, but then scored six straight goals in 13-11 win over Limestone. Florida Tech led by as many as seven goals in the second half, but Limestone scored the final four goals of the game, closing to two goals with 2:47 left. Sara Grenier scored four goals and Stephanie Stuart made 13 saves in the win.

Regis trailed Indianapolis 6-5, but then scored the final 16 goals of the game, holding Indy scoreless for the final 41 minutes. Wendy Donier (5g, 2a), Kyleigh Peoples (3g, 3a), Sarah Myres (3g, 2a) and Jada Bonner (4g) led Regis.
